House of the Dragon Season 3 is currently in production and is scheduled to release in 2026. The upcoming season will continue the intense Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, and is expected to bring more battles, strategic shifts, and power struggles across Westeros. Season 3 will consist of eight episodes, following the storytelling pattern set by previous seasons.
Filming officially began on March 31, 2025. HBO has also confirmed the return of key cast members, including Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II. Several new actors will also join the cast, such as James Norton, who will play Lord Ormund Hightower, an important character referenced in earlier seasons.
Redanian Intelligence just revealed behind-the-scenes photographs from the Season 3 set on X (previously Twitter), and all these photographs depict Ormund Hightower's camp. These majorly offer a first look at the future season's scale and setting, signaling preparation for huge war moments.
Season 3 will reportedly open with the Battle of the Gullet, a much-anticipated fight from George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood. Francesca Orsi, HBO's president of drama, confirmed that this conflict will begin the season and called it as one of the most ambitious moments the program has tried thus far.
In addition to large-scale battles, the season will focus on the ongoing rivalry between Team Black (Rhaenyra’s faction) and Team Green (Aegon’s supporters). With Rhaenyra’s forces growing stronger and her dragons ready for war, the stage is set for dramatic developments across Westeros.
In addition, showrunner Ryan Condal disclosed that Season 3 would have a special “conceptual episode” penned by Sara Hess, providing an alternative narrative style that prioritizes character over action.
It has been established that Season 3 will not be the series' last episode. Season 4 of House of the Dragon is anticipated to wrap up the show, giving ample time to completely adapt the remaining events from the original script.
With the start of production, the announcement of new cast members, and the publication of official set photos, HBO's House of the Dragon Season 3 is looking to be a significant installment in the series' history. It will be available for viewers to stream on Max in 2026.
