Ahead of the release of Wednesday Season 2, Netflix recently dropped an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette which takes a closer look at the upcoming second installment. The sophomore season of the Netflix show is widely believed to feature more of the Addams family along with continuing the narrative of Jenna Ortega's Wednesday Addams.
The upcoming season will pit Ortega's character against her mother and the other members of the family as they decide to join her in school. The second season will be rolled out on Netflix in two parts, with the first part dropping on August 6, followed by a second part, which shall be released on September 3. Here's everything we know.
The Addams Family will play a prominent part in Wednesday Season 2
Director and executive producer Tim Burton teased in the behind-the-scenes featurette that the Addams family would be joining Wednesday Addams at the Nevermore Academy, bringing one of her worst fears to life:
"This year, we bring the family to Nevermore. Your family at school is the worst thing possible, isn’t it?"
The featurette further reveals that Pugsley, played by Isaac Ordonez, would announce his arrival at the Nevermore academy and would put to use his powers of electrokinesis, as he is seen projecting electric beams on a stop sign in the featurette. Ordonez clarified:
"He really wants to fit in, and he really wants a friend, but it’s not looking very good. Poor Pugsley, he’s kind of an outcast among outcasts this season … Isaac did a really beautiful job of capturing the pathos of Pugsley."
However, Pugsley isn't the only one from Ortega's on-screen family to join her at her school. Morticia and Gomez Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman, would also be playing a determining role in the sophomore season. An interesting revelation made by the second season has the show developing the relational conflict between the protagonist and her mother, with Wednesday facing off against Morticia in a sword duel. Ortega commented:
"She’s so good! You can see she was a dancer. I feel really, really lucky to be experiencing this mother-daughter dynamic with someone as incredible as Catherine."
Most importantly, the sophomore season will present Joana Lumley as Morticia's mother, Hester Frump. Ortega's character refers to her as Grandmama, and she also happens to be one such character whose presence is welcomed by her. Lumley herself expressed her delight at having the opportunity to work with Tim Burton:
"There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. The world that they’ve created here, it looks sensational. It’s gothic, sometimes quite bone-chilling, but it’s kind of playful. "
What to expect from the upcoming second season
The upcoming sophomore season of the show will feature a markedly darker and more gothic tonality as compared to the first season, as attested by co-showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough:
"This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore."
Wednesday season two will be exclusively available on Netflix.
