Friends: The one quote from each iconic character that defines them

9) "Well, you kids talk about this place so much, we thought we'd see what the fuss is all about." - Jack Geller (Season 7, Episode 23)

Monica and Ross’s parents, Jack and Judy Gellar, have always been a huge part of Friends, and their appearances in episodes do elevate the humour and warmth of those episodes. Whether they appear to take care of their children going through a breakup or give them some friendly advice about complications in a relationship, Jack and Judy are the best recurring characters of the show.

In episode 23 of Season 7 of Friends, the couple visits Central Perk, the famous coffee house where the group spends most of their time. As Ross comes in while looking for Chandler, he is surprised to see his parents there. Jack then utters this dialogue, which sums up the relationship Ross and Monica have with their parents, as they had talked about this place so much that the parents decided to visit it themselves, to find out more about their children by visiting places they like.

8) "You're a strange kind of grown-up." - Mike Hannigan (Season 10, Episode 14)

Paul Rudd’s Mike might be one of the beloved characters, apart from the main cast of Friends. His addition to the weird but funny group of friends, in a way, depicted how an outsider might feel among the tightly-knit group.

This is more clear in Season 10, episode 14, when Joey tells Mike and Phoebe that he is going to see Monica and Chandler’s new house, only to point out problems in it so that they don’t move into the house and leave all of them. Mike utters this dialogue after this, making it funnier due to his delivery and also because we know all of them are strange adults.

7) "I wish she was my wife" - Gunther (Season 3, Episode 7)

The cast of Friends is among the most loved cast of all time, and not just the main cast but also the recurring characters, such as Gunther. And his unrequited love and admiration for Rachel were not at all hidden from the viewers, as we have seen several times in Gunther’s words or his thoughts, admiring her, which as a result became his personality.

In episode 7 of season 3, we get another such moment where Gunther tries to understand why Rachel likes Ross. His loud inner monologue also depicts how he wanted Rachel to be with him and not Ross.

6) "We were on a break!"- Ross Geller (multiple episodes)

The breakup or a break in Ross and Rachel’s relationship has become a running gag and also an internet meme. The first time we hear about this is in season 3 when Ross suspects Rachel of having an affair with Mark, and they decide to take a break. In anger and under the influence of alcohol, Ross has a one-night stand with a woman named Chloe, which results in more arguments between the two.

While Ross thinks that they had broken up, so this does not mean he cheated, Rachel tries to make him understand that they were on a break and had not broken up. This has become one of Ross’s most popular quotes and also highlights Ross’s will-they-won’t-they relationship with Rachel that had us asking until the end if they would end up together or not.

5) "That's right, I stepped up! She's my friend and she needed help. If I had to, I'd pee on any one of you!" - Joey (Season 4, Episode 1)

Joey’s first love might be his food, but his loyalty to his friends is unmissable. Since it's Joey, his approach to helping his friends often becomes a hilarious moment of the show.

For instance, when Monica gets stung by a jellyfish while trying to help Joey get out of the hole that he dug in the beach, he remembers a documentary where he heard that peeing on the area where Jellyfish had stung might cure it. As they recounted this event in episode 1 of season 4, Joey tells his friends that he stepped up to help his friend, and he would have done this for any of them, depicting how important his friends are to him.

Although at the end he gets stage fright and Chandler ended up doing the task, making it more hilarious, and also describes Joey well.

4) "It's like all of my life, everyone has always told me you're a shoe, you're a shoe, you're a shoe, you're a shoe.” - Rachel Green (Season 1, Episode 1)

Rachel was introduced in a dramatic way to the group of five people whom she later considers to be her best friends. Soaking wet, she ran from her own wedding with Barry, as she didn’t want to live the life that marrying Barry would give her. She tries to explain this to her father in a phone call and utters this dialogue, which her father couldn’t understand at all.

However, the metaphor describes Rachel and what she wants from her life clearly. She clearly tells him that she doesn’t want to live a life where she doesn’t have much choice and is guided by someone else. She wants to create her own path. Although initially she has no idea how to do all the things, gradually she learns to live her life on her own terms.

3) “I wish I could, but I don't want to." - Phoebe Buffay (Season 1, Episode 1)

The pilot episode of Friends gave us glimpses of all the characters through their dialogue and the situations they were in. For instance, we know Pheobe is kind and caring but never hesitates to speak whatever is on her mind, even if it even just a random thought.

We witness this when Joey asks her about helping the boys out with putting together Ross’s new furniture. Phoebe, in her nonchalant way, replies with the mentioned dialogue, clearly stating that she doesn’t want to help them. This establishes Phoebe’s character, which we later get to know more, that she likes to do things of her own accord.

2) "Now, I need you to be careful and efficient. And remember, if I am harsh with you, it is only because you're doing it wrong." - Monica Geller (Season 10, Episode 16)

Episode 16 of Season 10 is one of the most emotional episodes as the gang throws Rachel a going-away party, and she talks to all of them privately, making everyone emotional, but skips talking to Ross. While Rachel leaves, Monica and Chandler begin to pack their stuff to move as well, and involve their friends in the task.

Monica asks Joey and Phoebe to start packing the utensils in the kitchen and gives them instructions on how to pack them, and utters this dialogue, depicting her authoritative and compulsive personality. This highlights how Monica is particular about how to do even teh most simplest of tasks, which you have to follow as she will notice if it is done differently.

1) "I’m not great at the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?" - Chandler Bing (Season 8, Episode 17)

Any episode from the show is incomplete without some sarcasm from the one and only, Chandler Bing. And this quote might be the most direct one that implies how sarcasm makes him avoid some of the serious talks that he thinks he isn’t good at.

In episode 17, season 8, Rachel talks to Monica nd Chandler about the awkwardness that she is dealing with Joey after his confession about his feelings for her. He tells her that everything will be fine, to which she asks if things get worse rather than getting better. Chandler replies with the above dialogue as a way to divert the conversation, depicting his reliance on sarcastic and funny comments during situations like this to deflect tension and make everyone feel better.
