Jason Mantzoukas' portrayal of Adrian Pimento in Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the most unforgettable characters of the workplace comedy series. He was introduced as an unhinged former detective of the precinct who had been undercover for almost twelve years with an A-list mobster. He first appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 3, Episode 17, titled Adrian Pimento.
Who could forget Pimento's iconic introductory scene when he almost threatened Peralta with a knife right in the middle of the 99th precinct? When Captain Holt introduced him,
"Squad, meet Detective Adrian Pimeto. He's been deep undercover for the past twelve years, but he's just resurfaced and he's rejoining the Nine-Nine."
Jason Mantzoukas built a reputation for playing characters who are unhinged and are on the edge of insanity. The 52-year-old actor and comedian has been part of several projects, including The Long Dumb Road, John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum, Taskmaster, The Good Place, and more. However, fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine know him as Adrian Pimento, the deeply paranoid, frequently shirtless, brutal, and weird ex-detective. But for those who are aware of Jason Mantzoukas' previous projects, know that he has played a role more chaotic than Pimento. In FX's comedy series The League, he played Sofia's brother, Rafi, or Rafael.
The League's Rafi makes Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Pimento look surprisingly sane
Rafi was introduced in The League Season 2 as Ruxin's brother-in-law with a traumatic past. After he lost his wife and children in an accident involving Dirty Randy, he underwent a lobotomy. Rafi literally forced his way into the lives of the central characters of the show. His habits were extreme—he broke into homes, urinated in corners, and kept hotdogs in his pockets. Apart from casually threatening others with violence, one of his most disturbing habits includes engaging in graphic arts with watermelons in public. While most of the fans of the series found the character funny, some did not enjoy watching someone so unhinged and often vulgar.
On the other hand, Pimento had a human side to him. He often broke down due to his trauma. He can be a ruthless killer, but he struggled with love and other emotions. He even found moments of peace with Rosa Diaz. While Rafi, on the other hand, never had that side to him—he was unapologetically insane, vulgar, and chaotic.
Nonetheless, Jason Mantzoukas nailed both the roles. He presented himself as an absolute maniac!
Additionally, he played Dennis Feinstein, the vile fragrance maker in Parks and Recreation who enjoyed watching others suffer. Even in animated series like Big Mouth or Invincible, Jason found a way to channel his manic energy via his voice. He also played Nadal, the nuclear scientist with changing loyalty, in the 2012 film The Dictator. Moreover, he will also be seen in the upcoming 2025 film, Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie. Whether it's Pimento or Rafi, it is quite difficult to ace maniac roles as convincingly as Jason Mantzoukas!
All episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are available to stream on Netflix, whereas The League is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
