Hulu's drama series, Tell Me Lies, starring Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, dropped in September 2022.
Created by Meaghan Oppenheimer, set in a fictional Baird College in the 2000s, the series explores the stormy relationship of collegemates Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco.
The series unravels their toxic relationship and jumps across different timelines to explore the events that happened over eight years. Their tumultuous on-and-off relationship not only affects them, but also friends and family who get entangled in this toxic circle.
But for Lydia Montgomery, Lucy Albright's childhood friend, things took a different turn. Once inseparable, Lucy and Lydia's friendship eventually fractured, turning them into bitter foes.
Adding to the tension in Tell Me Lies Season 1 finale episode, Stephen and Lucy reconnect after several years at Bree and Evan's engagement party. They exchange an uneasy greeting as Stephen discloses that he's engaged to her ex-best friend, Lydia. Quite...shocking and embarrassing, isn't it?
How did Lydia and Lucy's relationship change in Tell Me Lies?
Lydia was Lucy's closest friend and secret keeper until 2008, so much so that she hated Stephen for hurting Lucy and called him a rancid.
However, an unfortunate week in 2008 changed everything. Lucy's friend Pippa and Lydia's brother Chris were seen hanging out at a party when Stephen's girlfriend Diana found a drugged Pippa lying on a bed with barely any clothes. Lucy was concerned about Pippa and doubted Chris.
In Season 2, Episode 7, the real reason for the fallout between Lydia and Lucy was revealed. Things turned sour between the besties when a girl called Katie accused Chris of ra**ing her.
Lucy supports Katie despite the lack of evidence and blames Chris. On top of that, she paints Pippa's incident as hers. When Lydia finds out about the entire incident, she breaks her friendship with Lucy.
Coming back to 2015, when Lucy met Stephen and Lydia at Evan and Bree's party, she was left shocked.
In Season 2's premiere episode, Lucy tried to initiate a conversation with Lydia; however, the latter showed no interest and said that she was present at the party for Stephen. The viewers were quite shocked by Lydia and Stephen's engagement, especially when Lydia knew that Lucy liked Stephen.
Lydia Montgomery's engagement twist was not part of the Tell Me Lies book
Tell Me Lies is based on Carola Lovering's 2018 novel, but did you know that Lydia's and Stephen's engagement twist wasn't a part of it? During a chat with Decider showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer revealed that she introduced Lydia's twist during the show's pitch.
She told Decider,
"That was actually the end of my pitch to Hulu, before they hired me. I was like, ‘And then he shows up with Lydia. I was like, ‘Who’s the craziest person he could show up with?’ And I don’t think anyone will see that coming, so I’m excited about that.”
Even though not much is revealed about the initiation of Lydia's relationship with Stephen. We can guess that Stephen, after finishing college, might have broken up with Diana and then reconnected with Lydia. The beginnings of their relationship remain a mystery and an essential plot line that could be explored in future seasons.
