Countdown Episode 12 took an unexpected turn, and this week's story might have just set up an intense finale for the Jensen Ackles thriller. Despite one of the best task forces protecting the state of California, the government does not look safe so far.
The press secretary of Governor Shelby has been murdered in broad daylight, and Nathan Blythe's team of misfit officers seems to be struggling with the clues left behind. The killer in question has been playing mind games with the Feds while leaving behind symbols and riddles, only to directly challenge the authorities to catch him.
But will they be able to? Why does the sniper want to cripple the government? Why is he out on a killing spree? All the answers lie on the other end of Countdown Season 1 finale.
Did Countdown Episode 12 just set up the perfect atmosphere of an intense finale? Here's what we think
After a long run of 11 episodes, Prime Video's latest crime thriller Countdown finally seems be have found a major creative breakthrough. The Derek Haas show recently received mixed reviews owing to the introduction of a whole new chapter mid-season, but the narrative now appears to be getting a good grip on the plot.
A mysterious killer with a disturbed past is out in the open and is extremely skilled with coded languages based on hieroglyphic-like symbols. Though it is still not clear what exactly he is trying to mean by all the coded messages that Nathan Blythe's task force has retrieved so far, his intentions are clear.
As we see in Countdown Episodes 11 and 12, the killer, aka Todd (as named by Mark), is apparently playing mind games with the task force. He is leaving one clue behind for them at every point of his deadly mission - only to lead them to the next riddle.
For instance, he uses fake rental information to book one of the Hammerhead cabins in Sugarloaf (where Mark and his team later discovered the secret underground shooting range). It leads the task force to a man going by the identity Trevor Kellen Pasternak, aka "T.K.," and they eventually learn that he was just a medium for the killer to establish a direct connection with the Feds. He leaves them a threatening message which reads:
"I will smash the heads of the government with broken teeth. You took everything from me, now you will feel what it means to have nothing."
In Countdown Episode 12, we see something similar happening as Todd the sniper leaves another coded message in a torn piece of a flyer. It had a symbol whose meaning is still unclear, but Nathan Blythe's unit finds a way out to deduce the full image of the flyer using their tech support.
It brings them to the next clue left by the killer, which is at a pub named Raising Bane. Here, the killer tries to make direct contact with the task force, and it turns out it was yet another sneaky move on his part to expose the leading faces of Nathan Blythe's highly confidential and critical mission.
But it's not the end - the sniper also leaves another message for the team, and this time, a direct challenge:
"Only death can stop me."
It not only implies his fearless state of mind but also portrays him as an individual with psychological issues. He is a cold-blooded killer who finds peace of mind by shooting wild animals. Moreover, right at the start of Countdown Episode 12, he snipes and kills the governor's press secretary - not to mention how he gets away from right under the nose of the state troopers and the federal agents.
Countdown Episode 12 thus ends on a tense note with one significant personality dead at the hands of the killer and the government being directly threatened. As it appears, the fundraiser led by the POTUS and the Governor of California is now inevitable.
Governor Shelby is hell bent to launch himself as the next Presidential candidate, and Nathan Blythe's attempt to stop him from making a public appearance has gone awry. So, the fundraiser campaign has a high chance of turning out to be the location of the showdown in Countdown Season 1 finale.
Countdown Season 1 finale definitely needs to address these questions
The President of the United States and the Governor of California meeting up for a joint venture demands huge security surveillance and protection. Will Nathan Blythe's team and other departments be able to defend the two nodal heads of the government? Or has the killer already loaded his sniper at the spot, waiting for the dignitaries to arrive?
Special Agent Nathan Blythe and his team are ready to put their own lives at stake to save the day, but they need to be ahead of the killer. They must comprehend what the symbols mean. Will anyone become a martyr? If yes, will it be our beloved protagonist Mark Meachum, or the new recruit Fitz, or someone else from the team?
The questions keep coming up, and Countdown Season 1 finale needs to provide all the answers. Right now, the atmosphere is perfectly set for a tense finale, and it's now less than a week's wait to see how the Jensen Ackles series grabs the opportunity to steal the show in the final moments.
