Ahead of the premiere of From Season 4, we have some interesting updates that could alter popular theories about the sci-fi horror series.
Created by John Griffin, this series takes viewers to an isolated town that traps anybody who trespasses. Survival in the ghostly town isn't easy and almost feels like a nightmare. From mysterious forests to supernatural creatures, the residents must come together to find a way out.
From isn't your regular sci-fi horror series. It keeps you guessing till the end of each episode. As a result, various theories have emerged regarding the origin of the ghostly town. Some call it a result of a shared dream, while others speculate that it's a purgatory where the people are stuck after their death.
However, the show's creators have denied these claims, and here's what they have to say about it.
From Season 4, creators rule out dream and purgatory theories
Predictability kills the suspense of any series, and that's what the creators wanted to avoid. The dream theories and purgatory sequence do make sense, but it gets way too predictable for a show like From.
In an interview with Emmanuel "E-Man" Noisette, From creators John Griffin and Jeff Pinkner debunked the popular theories. John Griffin noted,
"It's not purgatory and it's not a dream. Patrick Duffy is not going to come out of the shower at the end of the series finale and then say Hey! How you doing? Not purgatory, not a dream and they're not death"
While Jeff Pinkner added,
"I think that's a good list."
Here's what the latest update could mean for From Season 4. By ruling out the dream and purgatory theories, the series separates itself from cliché mystery tropes. The creators' revelation raises the stakes for Season 4, ensuring that the answers will redefine all the theories fans have made about the town, its rules, and who the mastermind behind it is. It signals that something more strange and more grounded in mythology or science could be at play.
How's From different from Lost? Here's what the creators have to say about it
Both John Griffin and Jeff Pinker have previously worked together on one of the most popular shows of the 2000s, Lost. Apart from the dream and purgatory theories, a lot of fans have been drawing comparisons between the two shows, and here's how the creators debunked another theory that From isn't another Lost all over again.
Pinker noted that other than some similar elements of the shows that include genre conventions, time travel, black and white, good and bad, grounded emotional science fiction, he thinks that the series are quite different.
"I think that these two shows, other than attempting to make the best possible show, I don't think that the shows have a lot in common."
Meanwhile, Griffin noted,
"I think it's fair to say that these shows have a lot in common, like From definitely exists as part of the legacy of Lost. Lost changed the game. I think they have same trappings I suppose but I think the DNA is very very different. We live in a similar neighbourhood we're taking a very different journey"
From Season 4 is set to release in early 2026 on MGM+.
