Funny You Should Ask, the 2022 best-selling romance novel by Elissa Sussman, is in the process of being turned into a series, and as reported by Deadline, Apple has landed the development of the novel. If the novel is greenlit to be made into a series, Regé-Jean Page, who is widely popular for playing Duke Simon Basset in Bridgerton, is going to executive produce it and also star in it.
As Apple is yet to confirm if Funny You Should Ask is going to be a series, if it does get made, it will be Page's first television role since the first season of Bridgerton. While his character, Simon's wife, Daphne (played by Phoebe Denvers), has made appearances in seasons two and three, Simon has not.
Thus, Page was not seen in Bridgerton after the first season and focused primarily on his film roles. But he would be returning to television, that too in a series based on romance, if Funny You Should Ask gets confirmed.
Funny You Should Ask: Regé-Jean Page's involvement, and much more
Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman is a romance novel that explores a unique love story. It follows an ambitious journalist who once interviewed a Hollywood heartthrob, but that's not the main plot. She meets him a decade later and learns how he feels about her. The series will be adapting the novel, and Rachel Alters is writing it for the screen. Tomorrow Studios will be producing the show after the studio signed a first-look deal with Robin Schwartz.
One of the key reasons behind Bridgerton season one's success was Regé-Jean Page's acting as Duke Simon Basset. The way he played the role of an initial rake turned hopeless lover turned devoted husband made viewers all over the world love the show. He set the bar quite high for future Bridgeton romances, and fans still wish he would make a guest appearance in future seasons.
While there is no news of seeing him play the romantic and chivalrous Simon Basset, audiences might get to see Regé-Jean in a new romantic lead if Funny You Should Ask gets greenlit for production. Then, he would also be executive producing it with Emily Brown, through their production company, A Mighty Stranger Production. Joining them would be Rachel Alter, Robin Schwartz, and Carolyn Daucher. Tomorrow Studios will be producing the show through Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Alissa Bachner.
This will be Page's first television role after Bridgerton. Since the Shondaland regency-era series, Page has played Denny Carmichael in The Gray Man (2020), Xenk Yendar in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), and James Stokes in Black Bag (2025). Before Bridgerton, Page starred in Roots as Chicken George and For the People as Leonard Knox.
If Funny You Should Ask goes to series, it will release and stream on Apple TV+, although Apple has yet to confirm any streaming details. The series could potentially be released in 2027, given the fact that it is still in development.
For now, you can watch Regé-Jean Page in Bridgerton, which is streaming on Netflix.
