FX officially added to its A-list roster for its upcoming limited series Cry Wolf by adding Brie Larson to the cast opposite Olivia Colman. Both women are Academy Award winners. This comes after a few months of rumors surrounding who would be matched up with Colman, who was revealed as a lead and executive producer earlier this year.

The series, developed by Sarah Treem, is an adaptation of the Danish drama Ulven Kommer and delves into the complicated repercussions of allegations of child abuse, taking cues from intricate family structures and social work interventions.

After Colman signed on to the project as both star and executive producer, Brie Larson was cast as her co-lead and also as an executive producer. FX picked up the project as a six-episode limited series. Treem, who created The Affair, came up with the show exclusively for the Disney-owned network.

Cry Wolf will feature Colman in the role of a social worker and Larson as a mother accused of abuse by her teenage daughter. The series unites major creative and acting talent across both sides of the Atlantic with a mission to deliver a psychological family thriller that explores trust, truth, and the effects of crisis on those trapped in its center.

The new cast addition: Brie Larson

Brie Larson has boarded the show officially, playing a mother whose daughter makes grave accusations. Larson is not only a star on the show but is also executive producing alongside Colman, Sarah Treem, Ed Sinclair (Colman's business partner at South of the River Pictures), and Melissa Bernstein for Special Interests.

Larson has been nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Room and starred in the lead roles of Captain Marvel and Lessons in Chemistry. She just received an Emmy nomination for her acting and producing role in Lessons in Chemistry. She also guest-starred on the FX series The Bear recently. Larson's reps include WME, 2PM Sharp, and lawyer Robert Offer.

Olivia Colman's role in Cry Wolf

Olivia Colman, the winner of the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in The Favourite, is coming back to FX after appearances in Great Expectations and a guest role in The Bear, for which she was Emmy-nominated.

Colman will play a social worker at the heart of the show's action. She played a key role in selling the project to FX and worked closely with Sarah Treem and the original Danish format's executive producers.

Colman has vast television experience, including her Emmy-winning role in The Crown, and she has also been an executive producer for Cry Wolf. She is represented by United Agents, Johnson Shapiro, and CAA.

Story background and inspiration

Cry Wolf is a remake of the Danish series Ulven Kommer, which was developed by Maja Jul Larsen. The original series revolved around a social worker probing the reality behind abuse charges filed by a teenager against her mother.

Variety reports that FX's take will retain this core story, with Colman and Larson as the two primary adult characters whose actions and choices become the driving force of the series.

The Danish version was known for its rich portrayal of institutional and family dynamics, and the FX adaptation will take a similar psychological thriller tack. Sarah Treem, a veteran of character-driven drama, is also the showrunner and executive producer, adding more creative authority to the adaptation.

Production team and development history

FX Productions produces the project in partnership with South of the River Pictures, Special Interests, and the format's original rights holders at DR, the Danish broadcaster. Aside from Sarah Treem, Ed Sinclair, and Melissa Bernstein are executive producers, like Colman and Larson. DR Sales' Maja Jul Larsen, Christian Rank, and Claudia Saganario round out the group.

Production began in February, and Cry Wolf was greenlit with Larson added as co-lead. Deadline reported, this sped the series' move from development to production, affirming its high-priority status at the network.
