Apple TV has recently renewed Slow Horses, one of its superhit spy thrillers, for a seventh season and will release the fifth season this year on September 24, 2025. It narrates the story of a group of MI5 agents who have been sent to Slough House after they failed in their given missions. Slough House is kind of a banishment room for the agents and is headed by Jackson Lamb, played by Gary Oldman.
In the four seasons, we have seen the Slow Horses, led by Lamb, help solve various threats, but not without putting themselves at risk. For which they are often scolded by Lamb, who shows no mercy or softness toward them. However, we have also seen Lamb being there for his team whenever they were deep in trouble and getting them out even without them asking for help.
In a podcast called TV Topics, Gary Oldman talked about Slow Horses and the loyalty that he has toward his team. He said:
"I don’t know if it’s softness, but there’s a loyalty there to his slow horses."
More on this in our story.
Gary Oldman is loyal to his team in Slow Horses
Gary Oldman’s Lamb is an exceptional spy and holds a strong dislike against the bureaucrats, which is visible in his conversations with any other MI5 official or the police. Other than the flatulence, Lamb is also popular for his sarcasm, which is often directed toward his team of slow horses. We have seen the team work on several missions that involved them breaking laws as well. For instance, stealing classified files from the MI5 Headquarters and getting into a fight with the police.
Lamb scolds his team with his crude remarks for their incompetence, but also ends up being involved with them and saves them from life-threatening situations. For example, in season 4 of Slow Horses, Lamb confirms that the dead body found in David Cratwright’s home is of River’s, without even knowing about his whereabouts himself. He might call them names and curse at them, but he always comes in to support the slow horses whenever they are in need.
To add to his previous comment, Oldman shares about his way of showing his care toward his team and said:
"He berates them and bullies them and humiliates them, but would take a bullet for them. But he doesn’t often reveal that side of him. Is it at the end, I’m trying to think, is it at the end of season four where he meets River in the pub? That’s his way of being nice."
While Slow Horses has impressed the audience with its intricate narratives, the highlight will always be the camaraderie between the slow horses and their boss.
More about Slow Horses
Season 4 of the Slow Horses brought an important character from River’s life, his father, Frank Harness, into the mix, and David was sent to a care home due to his Alzheimer's. As per teasers shared for season 5, Oldman’s Lamb would again play an important role and help the MI5 with his extensive field experience, and also use his slow horses to solve the next big case.
Apart from Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden, the spy thriller also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce, Saskia Reeves, and Rosalind Eleazar, among others.
