The new CBS police drama titled Boston Blue, which is part of the Blue Bloods franchise, debuted on October 17, 2025.
The storyline of the series revolves around the NYPD detective named Danny Reagan (played by Donnie Wahlberg), who moves to Boston and teams up with detective Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) to navigate the law enforcement hierarchy in the city and uncover the layers of family, faith, and justice visible in every case.
The show is directed by Anthony Hemingway, alongside Randall Zisk, who guided the pilot episode of Boston Blue. The return of the character played by Wahlberg is one of the highlights of the story, which is now even more interesting with the introduction of the Silver family, a Boston-based dynasty of law enforcement that spans generations.
Director Anthony Hemingway, who is also an executive producer, shared in an interview with Deadline that his entry into the Boston Blue universe was a mix of professional and personal reasons. He recalled being informed by his agent about a call where they wanted to collaborate with him. That call not only introduced him to Boston Blue but also reconnected him with his long-time partner, Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind the original CSI franchise and the Blue Bloods legacy.
Anthony Hemingway on joining the Boston Blue

Speaking with Deadline, Hemingway said:
“Donnie Wahlberg and I go back multiple decades. He is a national treasure, that man. He’s such, just a beautiful spirit, beautiful human and an amazing actor. So, I get a call from my agent, basically saying this new pilot spinoff for Blue Bloods is starting Boston Blue and they’re interested in you. You know, I have a very long relationship with Jerry Bruckheimer and his team. Shortly after I have my directing debut on The Wire, I moved to L.A. and the next show I did was CSI: NY, and that introduced me into the Bruckheimer family, so I’ve been with them for a couple decades now So, when it came to Boston Blue, I’m like, well, send me the script and let me check it out.”
Moreover, he recalled the feeling he had when going through the Boston Blue script, written by the Brandons (Brandon Sonnier and co-showrunner Brandon Margolis), which harmonized the heavy burden of fan expectations with new, real storytelling and a new emphasis on both Judaism and Christianity in the law enforcement community of Boston.
The project's approval was primarily based on CBS's confidence in Hemingway's vision. He spoke of the network's openness to his method and their unflinching backing of the writers as "rare in today’s system", a condition that allowed him to lift Boston Blue over the clichéd procedure spin-offs. Hemingway pointed out that the creation of the series and its eventual coming into being are gifted not only by the artists but also by the professionals' relations.
In his words:
“I think overall what it speaks to its relationships, and that’s something that I foster.”
What is Boston Blue about?

Boston Blue, the newest addition to CBS's sprawling Blue Bloods franchise, premiered on October 17, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, occupying the network's traditional Friday night time slot.
The series kicked off with the pilot episode, Faith and Family, helmed by Anthony Hemingway and written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis. Season 1 of Boston Blue comprises 12 episodes, which will be released every Friday until January 2, 2026.
The premiere episode reveals a whole new era in the Reagan family saga and quickly gets into the thick of things. Detective Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) transitions from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department after spending many years working for the New York Police Department.
He has a new partner, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), with whom he will investigate the first case, the fire that killed a person at a tech company. What appeared to be an easy case soon turned into a complicated one because of the involvement of facial recognition technology, privacy issues, and political connections.
Besides, Danny's acquaintance with the Silver family, which is a multi-generational Boston law enforcement dynasty, is one of the similarities and tensions that his New York background offers. The whole episode brilliantly and emotionally connects the Blue Bloods world to the new one in Boston, i.e., balancing the common things such as faith, duty, and family with the new dynamic that is deeply rooted in Boston’s culture.
The upcoming installments will delve deeper into not only Danny's integration into Boston but also his continuing relationship with Lena Silver. Episode 2, entitled Teammates, will air on October 24, 2025. It will focus on a murder case concerning a whistleblower connected to the Boston District Attorney Mae Silver's (Gloria Reuben) office, thus opening a chance for a more profound examination of the influence that the city has.
The following episodes, such as History (October 31) and Rites of Passage (November 7), will be the next step in the process of probing into the personal and professional lives of the Reagans and Silvers, and will also present new storylines related to the intergenerational debate over policing ethics, civic loyalty, and identity.
