Gilmore Girls has given fans some of the most unforgettable characters ever written. The show feels like family because of the way we get to follow the lives of the quick-witted Lorelai and her coffee-loving daughter Rory. But there’s one person who has always stood by them. It's Luke Danes. Played by Scott Patterson, Luke is the grumpy yet warm-hearted owner of Luke’s Diner in Stars Hollow. He cared for everyone who walked through his diner doors.

Luke’s story in Gilmore Girls starts off as a small-town guy who’s seen too much of life’s mess to sugarcoat things. But he is still loyal and kind under all that gruffness. His relationship with Lorelai is one of television’s most cherished slow-burn romances. It is full of banter and heart. Luke is the emotional backbone of Gilmore Girls. He is the person everyone could count on.

Gilmore Girls: The one line Scott Patterson never wanted to say

It turns out even the most beloved characters from Gilmore Girls have moments their actors would rather forget. Scott Patterson played Luke Danes for all seven seasons and the Netflix revival. He recently shared that there’s one line he still wishes he never had to say. It came during a funny little scene with Kirk Gleason.

He shared with E! News in an interview:

“I'm a fan of Tom Cruise, how can you not be? But Luke had a line - I think Kirk came in and I told him, ‘There's nowhere to sit. Everything’s taken.’ He goes, ‘Well, if I were Tom Cruise, where would you tell me to go or sit?’ And my response was, ‘An acting class.’”

This was hard for Scott because he does not have the same opinion in real life. He made it clear that he's a Tom Cruise fan and so he wished he never had to say that line. But he also said:

“I thought it was extremely funny. That's one of the elements of the show that makes you fall in love with it. I think people are just tired of everybody sucking up to everybody. Here comes a show that's smart, really funny, and irreverent and heartfelt and small town. And it's just so good. It's just so fun to watch it.”

Gilmore Girls fans know Luke’s humor is never mean-spirited. His sarcasm was usually directed at life’s little absurdities. That’s what made the line feel off for Patterson. It wasn’t something Luke would say with real bite. And that's because Luke wasn’t about tearing others down. He was grumpy but never cruel.

Still, it’s one of those moments that show how much Patterson understood Luke and the show itself. Even after all these years, his care for the character and the show is still pretty apparent. Gilmore Girls is primarily known for the mother-daughter bond of Lorelai and Rory. But the people who held their world together also mattered equally. And Luke, in his flannel shirts and baseball cap, was one of those characters in the show who deeply cared for the duo.
