The Gilmore Girls fan theory that Kirk Gleason is Taylor Doose’s son (or at least they are related) is one of the more entertaining and oddly compelling ones in the show’s lore. While the series doesn't confirm the same at any point, the fan theory continues making waves even two decades later. Fans have pointed at several intriguing overlaps between Kirk and Taylor to support the theory.

Both Kirk and Taylor share similar personalities. They are obsessive, quirky and rule-oriented. They are curious about order, structure and bureaucracy. Secondly, Taylor acts like a controlling father at times, giving Kirk tasks and making sure he does them right. Read on for more such comparisons validating the fan theory.

In Gilmore Girls, Taylor is the de facto mayor and deeply involved in all Stars Hollow events. Kirk is everywhere, too, doing everything, often inserting himself into town functions. Therefore, their over-involvement in town business feels like an inherited behaviour. Kirk's backstory is not known in the show, and we know nothing about his parents, upbringing and home life. Therefore, it leaves a door open for this possibility to stem.

Another theory, some fans state, is that even if they are not father and son, they could be related somehow — maybe as uncle and nephew, or distant cousins. A more conspiratorial theory proposes that both Kirk and Taylor work for Emily Gilmore. Since Gilmore is shown to be controlling, likely to stay in the loop about what is happening, it is an amusing theory if they are both her spies.

If any of this is true, it will definitely give Kirk and Taylor’s dynamic a deeper emotional layer, possibly explaining why they are drawn to each other (and drive everyone else nuts).

Here are some more clues that Gilmore Girls fans connect with the theory

In Season 3, Episode 15, Taylor casually mentions that night terrors run in the Doose family. In Season 4, Kirk admits to suffering from night terrors so severe that he asks Luke to keep an eye on him during the Dragonfly Inn’s soft opening. Therefore, according to fans, this could be a subtle clue that both are genetically connected.

In Gilmore Girls, Kirk is shown to have several strange jobs, many of which tie him with Taylor. Even though Kirk fails at his job, Taylor never fires him or stops giving him opportunities. Another clue comes when Taylor leaves town or can’t run events, Kirk is the backup, even when others might be more qualified. This suggests a level of trust and dependence not shown toward any other resident. This suggests that their love is beyond just a neighbourly one.

Moreover, Kirk once mentioned his mother, but his father is only mentioned once in passing — no name, no face, no details.
