Two big things have happened for God of War fans.
First, Amazon Prime Video has renewed the live-action TV show for a second season. Second, the team is moving forward. Scripts are being written, a showrunner is in place, and pre-production has started.
God of War renewed for Season 2: Here’s what you need to know

The live-action God of War show is moving ahead fast. Amazon Prime Video, which is making the show, has approved two seasons before Season 1 even comes out.
According to the report by Variety, the show also has a new director for the first episodes. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct them. He is known for shows like Shōgun, The Boys, Westworld, The Walking Dead, and Watchmen
This shows they want a strong and experienced person to set the tone. The first episodes are very important. They decide the pace, style, mood, and how the show adapts the game.
Ronald D. Moore, the series creator and showrunner, says writers are already working on scripts. At the San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Moore told Collider:
“We’re in the scripts phase. It's going very well. We've got a good team. I've never done a video game adaptation before, and the deeper I go into God of War, the more impressed I am with how much thought and mythology is built into this world.”
Because of this early start, the team can take its time. They do not have to rush the story into one season. They can spread it across multiple seasons. The original game is very popular. This shows that Amazon believes the show can do well and be creative.
God of War is now in pre-production. Casting has started. Filming is expected to start in March 2026. The first season will take over a year to film. With filming, special effects, and editing, the show might premiere in late 2027 or early 2028.
The TV series will follow the story of the 2018 God of War game. This is the Norse era. It features Kratos and his son Atreus. The show will follow their journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife, Atreus’ mother. This was her final wish and is a key part of the 2018 game.
The production team has several executive producers and writers. Cory Barlog, the game’s original director, is also among the producers.
There is no official casting yet for Kratos, Atreus, or other main roles. There’s no exact premiere date. Only estimates are available. The show seems to follow the 2018 game story, but it is not clear how closely it will do so. God of War might add new events or change some character stories.
What do we know about God of War?

God of War kicked off as an action-packed hack-and-slash game back in 2005 on the PlayStation 2. You played as Kratos, a fierce Spartan warrior. The whole story dives deep into Greek mythology, such as gods, monsters, and epic battles. Kratos is out for revenge, and nothing is going to stop him from taking on the Olympian gods.
The series grew with more games and spin-offs. In 2018, the series changed. It became darker, more mature, and focused on deeper emotions. The 2018 game is very popular. It still has exciting action and big myth stories. But it also focuses on characters, their relationships, and moral choices.
God of War is a myth-inspired story. It follows a powerful but troubled hero. It mixes big battles, mythology, and human emotions.
The new TV show will mostly follow the 2018 God of War story and its sequels. Knowing that world helps.
Setting
After many Greek mythology stories, the 2018 game moves to ancient Scandinavia. This is the world of the Norse gods.
The story includes many Norse realms. The main one is Midgard, where humans live. The story also goes to other realms like Alfheim (elves), Helheim (the dead), and Jötunheim (giants), and maybe more.
Moving from Greek to Norse myths is a big change. The first games were all about Greek gods. The new story explores different gods, giants, and creatures from Norse legends.
Main characters & their journey
Kratos: In the 2018 game, the character Kratos has become old and is weary of the battles. He has already put aside most of his brutal past. He resides in the land of the Gods, Midgard, along with his spouse, Faye, and their child, Atreus. At the beginning of the tale, Faye passes away. The last request she made is that her ashes be thrown from the tallest mountain in all the Nine Realms. This turns out to be the primary motive for their adventure.
Atreus: Then there’s Atreus, Kratos’s son with Faye. At first, Atreus doesn’t really know much about Kratos’ past. As they travel together, the two slowly start to trust each other. Their relationship, full of grief, talks, and growth, drives the story forward.
Mythological figures & beings: Kratos and Atreus run into all sorts of figures from Norse mythology on their journey. Gods, giants, monsters, and more. They meet a sorceress who is actually the goddess Freya, cross paths with Jörmungandr, the giant world serpent, and get advice from Mímir, who is cursed but pretty sharp. Of course, not everyone is friendly. Baldur shows up too, ready to cause trouble.
A big revelation is that Faye was actually a giant, called a Jötun. This makes Atreus half-giant, half-god, and half-human. His heritage is important for the story and future events.
Atreus’ original intended name was Loki. But Kratos named him Atreus to honor his human life and past. This hidden identity sets up bigger storylines.
Kratos struggles with his violent past. He tries to protect and raise Atreus. He also tries not to repeat past mistakes. God of War (2018) isn’t just about smashing enemies; it’s packed with action, sure, but it digs into something deeper. You get these huge, mythic battles, but the real punch comes from the story. Grief, responsibility, growing up, it’s all there. The game peels back the layers on its characters way more than you would expect from a typical hack-and-slash.
Plus, if you’re into Norse mythology, there’s plenty to chew on. The players have the chance to visit an almost completely open world, perform side quests, discover secrets, and face challenges that are not main objectives.
Combat: Kratos uses the magical Leviathan Axe at first, instead of his old Blades of Chaos. The axe can be thrown and called back, adding a strategic element. Later, old weapons may return, mixing old and new styles.
Companion dynamics: Atreus helps in fights, solves puzzles, and interacts with the world. He is not just for the story. This makes you play as both a god-warrior and a father/mentor.
The move to Norse mythology gives the series a rich world. It has gods, giants, many realms beyond Midgard, and mythic creatures. This allows bigger, epic stories. The game includes myths about gods, giants, fate, prophecy, memory, and cosmic stakes.
But the story also feels personal. It focuses on grief, loss, parenthood, forgiveness, and identity. The mythic journey is also about real human emotions.
The first season of God of War will reportedly have 10 episodes. The goal is not to remake the game scene by scene. The show will capture the game’s spirit, emotions, myth themes, and character relationships in live-action.
Showrunner Moore says there may be references or flashbacks to Kratos’ Greek mythology past. But this is not certain.
Speaking with Collider, Moore said:
“This world and this universe are really rich, and it's interesting, and it's really been fun to adapt. It's an adaptation, so it's an adaptation-slash-interpretation as you go into live-action, and it's been really fun to sort of go, 'Wow, there's a lot here we can play with. Okay, we want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of it'. There's all this stuff that you can keep turning to for inspiration. It's really been interesting.”
