The groundbreaking Netflix series Arcane, based on League of Legends—its first animated series, has already won critics over and some major players in the entertainment business, like Henry Cavill.

Henry Cavill, famous for playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, has revealed his favourite Netflix show in a BBC Radio 1 interview. It isn't a surprise that Cavill loves Arcane so much more than anything. A man-of-the-world whose "excuse" for gaming once resulted in a missed laugh from Man of Steel because he was so deep in World of Warcraft; Cavill is also producing a Warhammer 40,000 series.

Arcane is driven by a genuine interest in fantasy and sci-fi; he can be assumed to be a beta tester — a show that knows how to cook both world-building with a heart-wrenching plot.

Why Arcane works for gamers and non-gamers alike

Arcane's most impressive feat is that it is accessible to everyone, i.e., it can be understood by people who aren't familiar with the game. Positioned within the vast world of League of Legends, it focuses on the sisterly rivalry between Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell). The sisterly bond is put to the test when tensions flare between the sprawling city of Piltover and the underground slums.

Describing his feelings about the show, he revealed:

"I couldn't stop watching it, and it got really late. And Natalie (Viscuso) was going 'Right, we should probably go to bed. I was like, 'No, no, no, no, gotta keep on watching."

The smartest thing about the show is that it is fun regardless of how long you've played League of Legends. Versus fans who, by this point, will get to witness characters they've been able to see for years. To newbies, it is an utterly compelling get-in point that doesn't care that you don't have any background. This broad appeal is likely part of what kept Henry Cavill and his wife glued to the screen.

Arcane delivers on animation, emotion, and complex characters

In rich storying terms, Cavill has been a proponent of the fantasy genre, and that is what the show offers. The rest of the cast has so many dimensions and complex layers to unpack, as well. Vi and Jinx aside, we have Caitlyn (Katie Leung), the upright femme fatale enforcer, Jayce (Kevin Alejandro), the creative genius and Viktor(Harry Lloyd), the morally grey alien, among others.

Their entwined narratives are as deep emotionally and as unexpectedly prowling ideological disputes.

It puts the lie to all those who claim that video games cannot be adapted successfully. The one-of-a-kind animation style of the series and its stylishly animated hand-painted textures from Fortiche Production genuinely make every frame resemble a depicted being. And stack in the right music (Imagine Dragons’ “Enemy” from top to bottom), and you can obviously see why it turned into such an addictive binge for someone in Cavill’s shoes.

Netflix and Arcane: A winning formula for video game adaptations

Arcane is an underappreciated but assured swimmer at the front of Netflix's expanding video game adaptation collection. Games of the Castlevania variety, like Cyberpunk: Edge Runners and Devil May Cry, have taken improvements upon what entertainment adaptations can offer; they scratch the low-hanging fruit.

By releasing episodes in three-week batches, the show maintained narrative momentum while attracting fans of the genre who know they will return for more.

Henry Cavill’s praise further elevates Arcane’s legacy

Arcane is Netflix's answer to a movie and TV show that hits all stops on the production chain, acting as proof of concept for what animation can be when driven with purpose.

And if an actor, a genre storytelling-loving gamer guy like Henry Cavill, praises a show for what it is, it makes a statement. His “gotta keep watching” moment isn’t just a fanboy reaction; it’s a reflection of the show’s undeniable quality.

With a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a second season on the way, and a spin-off in the works, the show isn’t just a hit — it’s a landmark in animation and video game storytelling. And if Henry Cavill can’t stop watching, maybe you shouldn’t either.
