More about Government Cheese

Created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, Government Cheese falls in the genre of historical surrealist comedy. While talking about the kind of show, David Oyelowo, who plays the central character Hampton Chambers, mentioned in an interview,

“It's a parabolic surrealist absurdist family comedy.”

Creator Paul Hunter, on the other hand, wanted his show to convey what it felt like to be a Black family who likes to live inside a bubble of their own. He said,

“When I was growing up in the early ’70s, there was a lot going on with the Black Panthers and all that kind of stuff. My family didn’t really focus on that stuff. We just kind of stayed in our own world.”

He further added, talking about the central family in the show,

“It’s this group of people in their own world, and I wanted to express the feeling of being different compared to what people thought the way we should be, especially as Black people.”

Government Cheese can be streamed on Apple TV+.
