The British crime drama, Grantchester, premiered in October 2014 and has been one of the popular ITV dramas. The show has premiered for nine seasons and, as recently revealed, will wrap up with an upcoming 11th season.
The detective drama is set in the mid-20th century and narrates the story of an unlikely duo of an Anglican vicar and a Detective Inspector, who, with their unique ways of investigating, uncover truths about the crimes and murders around Grantchester village of Cambridgeshire.
The series began with the murder of a man, which was ruled a suicide, but investigations hinted at foul play. Season 1 of Grantchester had an incredibly talented ensemble cast, some of whom are still a part of the series, who helped make it a fan-favorite show.

1) James Norton as Reverend Sidney Chambers
Reverend Sidney, played by James Norton, was one of the lead characters of Grantchester. A former Scout Guards Officer during World War II and now a vicar, Sidney was the one whom the mistress of the dead man in Season 1 claimed was not a suicide but murder.
Sidney’s decision to investigate the case began his often turbulent friendship with Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, and the duo solved several crimes around the village until season 4, after which Norton left the show.
Aside from Grantchester, you might have also seen the British actor in War & Peace, Black Mirror, and films such as Little Women and Mr Jones, among others.
2) Robson Green as DI Geordie Keating
Reverend Sidney often clashed with the taciturn detective Geordie Keating, played by Robson Green, in Season 1 of Grantchester, due to his meddling in the criminal cases. However, they later developed a great partnership that helped in solving these cases as they both brought their own unique way to look into the cases.
Green’s Keating is still the lead of the detective series and is also popular for his appearances in Soldier Soldier, Reckless, and Wire in the Blood, among others.
3) Kacey Ainsworth as Catherine ‘Cathy’ Keating
Kacey Ainsworth plays Cathy, the wife of Geordie in Grantchester. They have four children together. Their relationship is one of the highlights of the detective drama as they have faced a lot of difficulties over the course of nine seasons, and they have been together since Season 1.
Other than Grantchester, Ainsworth has appeared in EastEnders, Call the Midwife, and The Worst Witch, among others.
4) Al Weaver as Leonard Ernest Finch
Another character from Grantchester Season 1 was Al Weaver’s Leonard Ernest Finch, who is still part of the main cast of the detective drama. A clergy man of the Parish, Leonard’s story is one of the most heartwrenching and intriguing. In the initial seasons, Leonard had to hide his sexuality due to the criminalized laws against homosexuality in the 1950s.
However, just like the country, where the laws were decriminalised in the late 1960s, Leonard’s character also saw a change in his character arc, becoming an important part of the series.
Other than Grantchester, the English actor has also appeared in Life in Squares, The Nativity, and films like Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice, among others.
5) Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman
The retired businessman, who worked for a while in India, returns to Grantchester, where he grew up. Jack Chapman (Nick Brimble), also later marries Sylvia Chapman in season 3, another important character from the detective series since Season 1.
From the soap opera Emmerdale to the drama series The Coroner, Brimble has been in several TV shows.
6) Tessa Peake-Jones as Sylvia Chapman
Jack married Sylvia Chapman, played by Tessa Peake-Jones, in Grantchester. She is one of the most important characters of the series, and is the housekeeper of the vicarage, and is a devout religious person, who has spent all her life in the village of Grantchester.
Aside from the ITV drama, Peake-Jones has also been seen in dramas such as Pride and Prejudice, Doctors, and The Demon Headmaster, among others.
7) Morven Christie as Amanda Hopkins
Morven Christie appeared as Amanda Hopkins in the detective series. She played the character of Reverend Sidney’s former love interest, who gifted him a puppy after their breakup, so that he wouldn’t be lonely in season 1 of Grantchester.
Other than her relationship with Sidney, Amanda was an art restorer and worked at the National Gallery in London, and was part of the first three seasons of the show. The Scottish actress has been in numerous plays, films, and TV shows.
For instance, she appeared in Doctor Who, Lockwood & Co., Oliver Twist, and films like The Young Victoria and Floodlights.
