ABC is gearing up for a Fall premiere of its longest-running medical series as Grey's Anatomy Season 22 is scheduled to debut on October 9, 2025. The juggernaut of all Primetime shows, this Shonda Rhimes-created Emmy-winning series has been a staple medical procedural on ABC since 2005.

After numerous cast shake-ups and behind-the-scenes drama, Grey's Anatomy has returned stronger than ever, and it's finally time to return to Grey-Sloan for Season 22.

Grey's Anatomy Season 22 will also mark Ellen Pompeo's return to her namesake character of Meredith Grey. While she passed the baton to a young generation of doctors, the actress has confirmed that she will continue to pop 'in and out' of Grey Sloan. The Season 21 finale saw a major shift for her character, where she agreed to work in the OR in exchange for space to continue her Alzheimer’s research.

Grey's Anatomy Season 22 release and streaming details

As ABC's senior-most scripted television show, Grey's Anatomy Season 22 will return on the network on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 10:00 ET/PT. The show will air weekly episodes on Thursday at its regular time slot on ABC. Additionally, fans who wish to stream the new season, episodes will also be released on Hulu and Disney+ the following day.

Season 22 of Grey's Anatomy will debut alongside another beloved ABC staple, 9-1-1, and its freshman spin-off series, 9-1-1: Nashville. While all three procedurals were scheduled for an October 16 premiere, ABC moved their premieres up by a week. Thus, you can catch the new seasons of Grey's Anatomy & 9-1-1, and 9-1-1: Nashville Season 1 on October 9.

What are the plot details for Grey's Anatomy Season 22?

As the longest-running medical drama on television, Grey's Anatomy Season 22 will continue to follow more medical emergencies for the Grey Sloans' medical staff. However, there were many 'explosive' cliffhangers in the Season 21 finale, which will be addressed in the Season 22 premiere.

In a May 2025 interview with Variety, Executive producer and showrunner Meg Marinis addressed how the cliffhanger in the Season 21 finale was an ode to the medical show's glorious formative years:

“In the past, we’ve had people threaten the hospital...“But we were like, ‘What does it look like when a destroyed mom does it?’ So we did a twist on this story and wanted to do a nostalgic ‘Grey’s’ finale where you don’t know who lives and who dies.”

Dr. Amelia Shepherd received an emergency case of a 9-year-old girl named Dylan Gatlin with locked-in syndrome. While the young girl needed immediate surgery, Amelia needed to stabilize her brain bleeding first. However, Dylan's mother threatened to burn down the whole hospital if her daughter did not receive immediate treatment. While Amelia and the OR team successfully operated on Dylan, a forgotten valve jeopardised the building and led to a massive explosion.

Grey's Anatomy Season 22 will begin in the aftermath of this explosion, where only Ellen and Ben are safe (considering they were outside the building). While the series will not likely feature any major character deaths, there could be serious injuries and trauma.

Grey's Anatomy Season 22 cast: Meet Grey Sloan's returning medical staff

While Ellen Pompeo made her heartbreaking exit from the show in Season 20, she will continue to play the titular character of Meredith Grey in Season 22. Pompeo also serves as an executive producer and narrator of the series. Additionally, Jason George's Ben Warren is also confirmed to return in the upcoming season.

The fate of many characters is still uncertain after the Season 21 finale, but according to an official report by Deadline, most of the characters will return in Grey's Anatomy Season 22. These include Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber, Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia, Kim Raver as Teddy, Adelaide Kane as Jules, Niko Terho as Lucas, and Harry Shum Jr. as Benson.

Earlier, Mika Yasuda's Midori Francis and Levi Schmitt's Jake Borelli left the show during Season 21, making the young roster of doctors at Grey Sloan even smaller.

Tune into Grey's Anatomy Season 22 on ABC on October 9.
