The Max TV Show has repeatedly examined factors like ambition, ego, and showbiz, but the latest episode forces its lead, Deborah Vance, to choose between her ambition and her loyalty.

When power plays threaten to destroy and wreak havoc in Ava’s career, Deborah takes a stand, ending her dream job to save the only person who’s turned into her one true creative lifeline.

Deborah chooses Ava over her dreams in a shocking Hacks twist

Hacks crafts an important turning point as Deborah Vance sets fire to her very own success to save Ava from the terrible fallout of an industry scandal. After Ava’s offhand remarks about protected predator Ethan Summers reach the press, the media empire behind Deborah’s late-night TV show scrambles to secure some amount of damage control.

Bob Lipka, the media executive for the late-night show, demands that Ava be fired, regardless of how the show has been thriving at the number 1 spot. But instead of following through with Bob’s orders, Deborah gives a monologue to expose the network’s hypocrisy and refuses to let go of Ava.

This act of defiance is an important shift for Deborah in her character development. In previous seasons, her choices were always driven by her desire to fulfill her ambition and goals, choices that often came at a cost of losing people.

But as her relationship with Ava deepens over the course of four seasons, Deborah gradually recognizes that the ruthless system she once looked up to is now unsustainable and morally wrong on so many levels.

Her being on-air and shutting down her own show was powerful yet unexpected, yet it did happen. All of this just to save and not let go of the one person who now truly understands her: Ava.

This also echoes and draws on the show’s personal themes: creative integrity often requires loss. Deborah’s final words to Ava cement their relationship to be even stronger in a broken and fractured media industry were:

“There’s no show without you…”

Hacks turns the camera on the industry’s old habits

The show is no longer just a humorous take on showbiz or about a female-led duo.

The episode turns into a mirror that reflects Hollywood and its inner workings. Ava, whose morality hasn’t once been shaken up throughout the entirety of the show across all of its previous seasons, turns into a punching bag and a target only for speaking out something that actually matters and something that’s the truth.

But rather than letting the industry eat and chew her up, Hacks decides to flip the script. Deborah, once wanting to thrive in this system, finally refuses to play the dirty game.

Deborah’s decision is more than personal to her—it's also, in a way, a political stance. Her saying a strong ‘no’ to protect a predator turns her final late-night broadcast into a scene in which she finally rebels against this broken system.

In doing so, Hacks critiques how powerful people and companies within the industries shield people who aren’t deserving while disregarding the truth.

It’s a high-stakes choice, one that costs Deborah her lifelong goal and ambition of hosting her very own late-night show. Still, her sacrifice becomes a powerful statement to save Ava for being righteous and refusing to partake in dirty industry games.

Hacks, Season 4, Episode 9 doesn’t just move the story forward – it redefines the entire show. By having Deborah sacrifice her one true dream for Ava’s integrity, the show transforms its characters and deepens its message.

As Hacks moves towards its Season 4 finale, it stands as one of the most fearless portrayals of friendship and doing what’s right in a world built to reward silence.
