It has been almost a decade since Bryan Fuller's TV adaptation of Thomas Harris' 1981-2006 novels, Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising, was cancelled after only three seasons. It was widely regarded as one of the rare projects that brought to life everything expected but was cancelled way too soon.

From its visual style to the lead actors' performances, there was nothing left to be desired. So, the cancellation brought an entire fanbase together, campaigning for a return.

Fuller, in a recent conversation with ScreenRant, revealed if there were any chances of Hannibal returning for another season and what his dream cast would look like if it does return.

While fans have been hoping for the franchise's revival for almost ten years now, there hasn't been much of an update since it was cancelled after Season 3, back in 2015. Creator Bryan Fuller, however, recently reunited with Mads Mikkelsen, who played Dr. Lecter, for his feature directorial debut Dust Bunny.

The creator and one of the lead actors from the franchise coming together for another project has led to fans speculating about the return of the series yet again. When Fuller was questioned about the series' return to our network television, he revealed that the entire team involved in the project was willing and ready to work on the fourth season.

Fuller revealed that most of the lead actors on the project, including Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Caroline Dhavernas, Laurence Fishburne, and Kacey Rohl, were involved. He also shared what his dream cast would look like if the franchise were to come back to life.

For him, given the chance to put anything out into the world, he would want to do a limited series of the novel The Silence of the Lambs and cast Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal, alongside Zendaya as Clarice Sterling. The Euphoria and Challengers actor is known for the wide array of emotions that she brings to the table, so she might just be one of the best choices for Clarice's role.

"My dream project is to do a limited series of Silence of the Lambs with Mads and Zendaya as Clarice Starling. If I could put anything out into the universe, I would put that into the universe."

However, the only thing stopping this from becoming a reality at the moment is that there is no clarity about the ownership of the rights to the film and TV franchise. He explains that Martha De Laurentiis, who owned a certain section of the rights to the franchise, passed away, and since then, Thomas Harris has been trying to bring the rights to the franchise under a single entity.

If and when this process clears up and there's certainty in ownership, Fuller and most of the leading cast are more than ready to make Hannibal Season 4 a reality.

"Thomas Harris is trying to get the rights all under one umbrella. And I think that's going to take a couple of years of straightening out. But the entire cast wants to come back: Mads, Hugh, Lawrence, Katie, Caroline – like everybody’s in. It's just a matter of: Will the rights be able to be figured out again?"

Therefore, for Hannibal to return to our screens, it seems many legal issues need to be resolved. If and when this happens, there is also the question of a streaming service or network interested in bringing the project to life.

Nonetheless, even if the hurdles are numerous, the fact that the creator and actors are so passionate and eager to bring Hannibal back offers a positive outlook for its fanbase.
