When Audible dropped its cast list for the upcoming Harry Potter audiobooks, it honestly felt like a fantasy league of British acting royalty. It's the dream cast fans have been begging for, for years, and in hindsight it has me wondering if the TV show could have actually done better.

Kit Harrington, the man who thrilled audiences with his performance as Jon Snow is stepping in as Gilderoy Lockhart. Keira Knightley, known for her period drama roles, is playing Dolores Umbridge. Iwan Rheon, best known for his role as Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones is playing Remus Lupin, and Ruth Wilson will be voicing Bellatrix Lestrange.

The lineup goes deeper. Ambika Mod is playing Tonks, Leo Woodall is stepping in as Bill Weasley, Simon Pegg is playing Arthur Weasley, joined by James McAvoy as Mad-Eye Moody.

With a stunning ensemble like this, the Harry Potter show has quite some competition as Audible just raised the stakes by bringing in some of the most iconic actors in Hollywood. The show has been under much chagrin for it's casting of a few roles, as fans who have doted on the books for decades have pointed out inaccuracies in the physical traits of the actors who have joined the cast.

Still, we will keep our judgment in check for when the show actually comes out, and we get our taste of a new Hogwarts, and new witches and new wizards. Till then, one can always watch the films to marvel at the wonderful casting choices; be it Alan Rickman as Severus Snape or Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall.

More details about the Harry Potter series

HBO is bringing the Wizarding World back to life with Harry Potter, a decade-long television series that promises to dive deeper into the books than the films ever did. Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton lead as Harry, Ron, and Hermione, chosen from a staggering 32,000 hopefuls. Alongside them, the cast is stacked with heavyweights: John Lithgow as a wise but commanding Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as the formidable McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu reinventing Snape, and Nick Frost as a warm, bumbling Hagrid.

The show isn’t cutting corners either. Filmed at Leavesden Studios, the birthplace of the original movies, it’s backed by HBO Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films. Francesca Gardiner steers the series as showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing episodes, ensuring a prestige-TV sensibility.

Fans can expect all seven books to be told season after season, with the first covering The Philosopher’s Stone. Production is already underway across England and France, complete with authentic sets, a custom-built school for its young cast, and Alexis Wajsbrot overseeing VFX wizardry.

The Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere in early 2027 on HBO.
