Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant and gamekeeper at Hogwarts, is a beloved character from the Harry Potter books, who will come alive again on the small screen in the upcoming HBO series.
After the late actor Robbie Coltrane perfectly breathed life into Hagrid in eight movies, actor Nick Frost is all set to portray the character in the upcoming series.
The HBO series will adapt each Harry Potter book into a season and is one of the most anticipated projects right now, which has instilled a newfound interest in fans of the books.
Recently, the series also welcomed its golden trio- Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
In a recent interview with Collider, Frost discussed his character Hagrid and also revealed that filming for one season would take about "ten or eleven months". Filming is expected to start this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.
More on this in our story.
Nick Frost will take on the beloved role of Hagrid from the Harry Potter books
As opposed to his giant appearance, the grizzly-bearded Hagrid is a fan-favorite character in the Harry Potter books.
The first character Harry meets from the wizarding world, he eventually becomes the golden trio's uncertified guardian, friend, and confidante, giving them valuable lessons about their magical world along the way.
While the late actor Robbie Coltrane portrayed the half-giant gamekeeper in all eight films, Nick Frost is ready to take on the responsibility and fill some very big shoes (pun intended).
Talking to Collider, Frost shared his excitement to be a part of the magical world of Harry Potter books:
''Wow. That's the coolest thing.’ I love films. I’ve loved cinema my whole life, so to be part of that universe now and that they're showing me, like, a dancing mushroom, it's like, ‘That is so cool!’”
While Coltrane created history and left a legacy with his portrayal of Hagrid, Frost is determined to carve out his own character and not let the weight of the previous work dictate his understanding of the character:
“You get cast because you're going to bring something to that. While I'm really aware of what went before me in terms of Robbie [Coltrane]'s amazing performance, I'm never going to try and be Robbie. I'm going to try and do something, not ‘different,’ I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter, but within that, there's scope for minutia.''
Discussing his understanding of Hagrid from the Harry Potter books, Frost further added:
''I always read Hagrid as he's like a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child. I think the beauty of being able to do a book a season means I get to explore that a lot more, and I can't wait. He's funny! I want it to be funny and cheeky and scared and protective and childlike. That's what I'm planning on doing.”
While the films are etched into people's memories, the HBO TV series is a great way to introduce the magical world to the younger generation, and the new cast looks equally promising.
Frost's understanding of his character instills hope that the longer format of the Harry Potter TV series will provide more scope for characters like Hagrid and give them their due.
In addition to Frost, the Harry Potter TV series has also cast many more actors in iconic characters, including John Lithgow as Professor Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell.
