Tom Selleck is the name that fans immediately remember while thinking of the iconic crime TV series. Thanks to his role as Frank Reagan in Blue Bloods.

The actor portrayed the New York City Police Commissioner, who not only oversees one of the largest police departments in the world but also serves as the steady head of a multigenerational family deeply rooted in law enforcement.

In a past interview on the Rachael Ray Show, the Blue Bloods star opened up about the show’s long-standing success and his personal life. Selleck offered fans a rare, honest glimpse behind the scenes by saying:

"Great actors and great characters and good writing — that’s why it’s still on. What has always worked for me — or what my appetites are, they go towards character-driven shows."

The actor continued:

"So Magnum [P.I.] was character-driven. (I don’t remember half the plots… way less than half.) And when I saw this script, it was character-driven in an age where there [are] just so many procedurals on… I’m sure not bored with it."

Tom Selleck has always been more passionate about character-driven stories than action-heavy or plot-focused ones. He barely remembers plots from his other hit TV show, Magnum P.I., but what stood out to him were the characters.

That same quality—rich, layered characters—is what pulled him toward Blue Bloods, especially in a time when TV is filled with countless formulaic procedural dramas.

Tom Selleck is one of the most talented stars in the TV industry, and fans love to enjoy his acting skills on Blue Bloods. However, if you think that it was the main role that could have drawn him to the show, you're wrong.

As explained earlier, Selleck was intrigued by the character-driven story in his show. His character, Frank Reagan, is a calm, thoughtful, and highly disciplined man.

Unlike many high-ranking officials, Frank leads with quiet strength, making difficult decisions at work while also acting as the emotional backbone of his family. While he's in charge of the NYPD, he’s just as involved at home, often navigating challenges that test his values both as a commissioner and a father.

One of the most iconic parts of Blue Bloods is the weekly Sunday family dinner that Frank leads. They aren't just simple dinners but a time when the entire family gathers to create meaningful moments and talk about their cases and ensure each other's support.

The CBS drama concluded after fourteen triumphant seasons, leaving fans disappointed over the cancellation. Selleck himself expressed his frustration with it, suggesting Blue Bloods was taken for granted.

The actor said:

"I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year. But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience."

Selleck continued:

"I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it."

Despite the cast's readiness for the story to continue, CBS didn't continue after Season 14. However, the Reagan legacy is far from over, as Donnie Wahlberg is all set for the upcoming spin-off titled Boston Blue.

Not only this, Wahlberg is joined by Star Trek actress Sonequa Martin-Green, who will introduce fans to a new character, Lana, and her family dynamics. This way, the new series will offer a fresh narrative while sticking to its core theme.
