Fox's Doc Season 1 finale saw a shocking cliffhanger where Dr. Richard Miller (Scott Wolf) was suspended from the Westside Hospital after he gave the wrong medicine to a patient and inadvertently killed him.
With the medical series returning for Season 2 in September, fans are wondering whether Wolf's Dr. Richard will return in the sophomore season.
Based on the Italian medical drama Doc – Nelle tue mani, the 2025 Fox series is inspired by the true story of Dr. Pierdante Piccioni, the former chief of an emergency room, who forgot the past 12 years of his life following a brutal car accident.
The series stars Molly Parker as Dr. Amy Larsen, who struggles to rebuild her medical profession after a traumatic brain injury caused her to lose her memory.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Doc showrunner Hank Steinberg teased a potential return of Richard Miller in Season 2 as:
''We have a pretty clever way to potentially bring him back in the back half of the season and reconstituted in a different form of attitude.''
More on this in our story.
Scott Wolf hopes for Dr. Richard Miller's return in Doc Season 2
Doc Season 2 is likely to debut with some potential changes at the Westside Hospital following the shocking Season 1 finale. While Amy Larsen was reeling with the consequences of her car accident that caused her a traumatic brain injury and memory loss, her close friend, Dr. Richard Miller, threatened the foundations of their relationship.
In the wake of his son's bipolar and schizotypal disorder diagnosis, Dr. Richard was completely devastated and reeling from this personal loss. This caused an error in his judgment, and he ended up giving the wrong medication to a patient, which inadvertently led to his death. In addition, Dr. Richard not only tried to hide his involvement in the patient's death but also tried to blame Amy, but eventually ended the season with his medical license suspended.
While it remains to be seen if Richard could somehow return to Westside in Doc Season 2, Scott Wolf remains hopeful, as he revealed in an interview with TV Insider:
''I hope [Richard] has a future in medicine. I think what’s clear is he’s a person who has just lost everything, and that’s brutal. There’s nothing more that I would love than to be a part of this show. It’s really special.''
Connecting Richard's questionable decisions with the medical drama's larger themes of second chances and redemption, Wolf added:
''The fundamental premise of this whole show is, what would you do with a second chance? We don’t often get chances to go back to see who we were and do it differently...All of us have a chance to reckon with who we’ve been and for better or for worse. But to have a real chance to reset those things and maybe alter your identity in some way is really extraordinary.''
Doc Season 2 will likely feature a redemption arc for Dr. Richard Miller
Both Wolf and showrunner Hank Steinberg's comments suggest that Doc Season 2 will likely feature a redemption arc for Dr. Richard Miller in the latter half of the season. Since Richard was an important person in Amy's life before her tragedy, and they share a significant relationship, they will likely have a reconciliation, given the medical series' emphasis on second chances.
In addition, Richard could prove vital in Amy's journey to bring back her memories, earning a second chance in their friendship. The Doc finale saw Richard making Amy believe that her amnesia somehow took a patient's life, which surely shook the very foundations of their relationship. It would be interesting to see how Richard will rebuild Amy and his colleagues' trust in Season 2.
Teasing a potential redemption arc, Wolf also added:
''There was a time where [Richard and Amy] really loved each other and respected each other… And if that was something that she still held and somehow was willing to say...even this I can forgive and be willing to allow for this person in their humanity— I don’t know, anything’s possible...''
Doc Season 2 will premiere on Fox on September 23, 2025.
