The long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy's season 21 left the fans biting their nails with its cliffhanger when a hostage situation comes to shape inside Grey Sloan Memorial, leading to complete chaos.

A patient's family member ends up triggering a gas tank explosion at the hospital, putting the lives of several doctors in danger. The season finale reveals nothing about who survived the explosion, but Meredith Grey walks out of the hospital, witnessing the explosion behind her. Her eyes are full of tears, hinting at a major loss and chaos that is about to follow.

On May 15, 2025, season 21 wrapped up, and season 22 is about to arrive in October. Amidst the fans spiralling over who survived the explosion even after months, Entertainment Weekly has released some new photos from season 22. According to reports, these photos give clues about who survived the explosion and what comes next, along with what the showrunner of Grey's Anatomy teased.

What does Grey's Anatomy showrunner tease about the new Season 22?

Season 21 portrays Link in the operating room at the time of the explosion. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Meg Marinis, the showrunner, confirmed that Link's fate is the most uncertain one among all:

"We clearly saw Link in immediate danger. We'll just have to see whether Link makes it through this explosion...I wanted to return right to the chaos."

This suggests that season 22 will open right after the explosion, showing the chaos afterwards. Expect frantic ER scenes, doctors scrambling, and emotional reunions. Marinis added:

"There's obviously going to be some hospital rebuilding that needs to happen. And so we're going to play the aftermath for more than just the first episode, absolutely — the emotional trauma as well as the hospital needing to be put back together."

The hospital itself would need some reconstruction after the blast; therefore, changing the set design for the new season. Though photographs released by EW confirmed to an extent the characters who survived, the show is known for showing shocking deaths, such as those of Derek, Lexie, George, Mark, etc. So fans are bracing for one major loss before the show dives into the new season.

What can we make out about the character's fate from the photos from the Grey's Anatomy season 22?

Season 21 of Grey's Anatomy showcased Meredith surviving the explosion. In the recently leaked images, she is seen sitting beside Dr. Leah Westbrook, suggesting her survival but some severe injuries. Meredith's worried face only adds to the speculation and could affect the new season's drama.

Another photo shows Amelia, played by Caterina Scorsone, distraught, possibly after learning her colleagues' or patients' fate. Winston is trying to control her by holding her back. This shot hints at some emotional fallout, suggesting that someone close to her didn't make it.

The photos also revealed that Trevor Jackson is back as an intern. He is standing near the elevator with Simone Griffith. This, if seen logistically, could mean that the makers are trying to balance the lost character with some new ones, and keep it rolling.

Along with Link, Ben Warren was first outside, but he ran towards the tank again to check. Monica Beltran and Jules Millin are also on the same floor where the blast hit the hardest.

Now, what happens to Miranda Bailey, Teddy Altman, Lucas Adams, and Richard Webber is only to be seen in season 22 of Grey's Anatomy, whose release is not that far away.
