CBS's long-running police procedural Blue Bloods concluded its fourteen-season run in December 2024 with a befitting finale for almost every character. The show has been a staple for the network since 2010, and it was hard for the fans and even the cast to say goodbye to it.
The show follows the Reagan family, whose three generations have been part of the New York Police Department. It follows their daily personal and professional lives.
Donnie Wahlberg (Detective Danny Reagan) has been a main cast member on Blue Bloods since its inception, and it was clearly hard for him to bid farewell to his character. The show's cast also includes Tom Selleck, Bridget Moynahan, Will Astes, Len Cariou, and more.
Before the finale, when Access Hollywood asked Donnie Wahlberg about his feelings on the show's conclusion, he said:
''I still haven't really let go yet. I think when that final episode airs, I can officially maybe turn the page on it but I haven't quite gotten there emotionally yet.''
Here's a throwback when Wahlberg expressed his feelings about Blue Bloods' conclusion.
When Donnie Wahlberg opened up about the Blue Bloods Season 14 finale
It was hard for fans to see CBS's long-time procedural Blue Bloods conclude with Season 14, and they even signed many petitions to save the show, but it ended on December 13, 2024, anyway.
The finale saw natural conclusions for every character, but Danny's storyline got the perfect conclusion with Detective Maria Baez, which felt like the beginning of a romance. After Linda's tragic death, Danny had been single in the show for quite some time, and fans wanted to see his romance with Baez.
In the finale, making good on his grandfather's advice, he finally asks Baez out for pizza, and it is the perfect conclusion to his story.
Talking with Parade, Wahlberg reflected on his fourteen-season journey as Danny Reagan:
"I'll look back with gratitude, but I look forward always to each new day. I guess, though, with Blue Bloods after 14 years, it's a lot.''
He added:
''We had an amazing time in New York, we had an amazing time working together, and we were part of a show that meant so much to so many people. I try not to say, ‘I'll never do something that cool ever again,” and I just try to say how lucky am I that I got to do something so cool in my life."
Donnie Wahlberg will return as Danny in a Blue Bloods spin-off series
While Wahlberg and the whole cast tried to save Blue Bloods, its fate was set in stone. However, the detective will keep the Reagan legacy alive in a spin-off series titled Boston Blues.
Soon after the Season 14 finale, CBS announced the spin-off series in which Wahlberg will reprise his character. The show will follow Detective Danny as he relocates from New York to Boston for a new job opportunity away from his family.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Wahlberg teased about Boston Blues:
"I would say I would have Danny Reagan walk right into his next chapter of his life, maybe in a different place doing a similar job and perhaps with someone from the current cast.''
