The Last of Us co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner Craig Mazin has joined HBO’s upcoming high-concept mystery thriller Blackout Room as an executive producer. The series is written and directed by filmmaker Edson Oda, best known for his debut feature, Nine Days, according to Deadline.

The series is set in a future where every aspect of each person's life is livestreamed to the world. The narrative is about a woman whose son vanishes into thin air, and it becomes a global phenomenon. Jacqueline Lesko and Cecil O'Connor from Mazin's firm Word Games are also executive producers alongside Oda and Mazin.

This project is one of Mazin's continuing efforts under his overall deal with HBO. Although still serving as the individual showrunner for The Last of Us after Neil Druckmann's recent departure, Mazin has been working on other shows for the network as well. Blackout Room is one of two projects in development from movie makers working with him.

The premise of Blackout Room

According to Deadline, Blackout Room is a near-futuristic movie where individual privacy ceases to exist. People's lives are broadcast in real-time to the rest of the world every second. The story follows a woman whose young son vanishes without reason, even under constant observation.

Her quest for answers is a focus of worldwide fascination. The vanishing occurs in a world where no one should ever be able to disappear. This setup is the mystery at the heart of the drama.

The Blackout Room series is created by and executive produced by Edson Oda. Oda will also be directing the project. He is recognized for Nine Days, which had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Deadline states that Oda received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for that film. Nine Days went on to receive nominations at the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Feature and Best Supporting Male for Benedict Wong.

Craig Mazin comes aboard Blackout Room as executive producer under his production company Word Games, along with Jacqueline Lesko and Cecil O'Connor. Mazin is most well-known for co-developing The Last of Us on HBO. He is now the sole showrunner on that show.

Mazin's work outside of The Last of Us

Deadline says that Mazin keeps working on The Last of Us, renewed for its third season after season two received 16 Emmy nominations, Outstanding Drama Series among them. Blackout Room is included in a larger roster of projects that were in development under his HBO pact.

In addition to Blackout Room, Mazin, Lesko, and O'Connor are executive producing Damage, a show from director Celine Song, set in the cutthroat world of e-sports and also in development at HBO. The projects demonstrate the diversity of genres in which Mazin is currently working while continuing his job on The Last of Us.

Blackout Room is in development at HBO with no release date announced.
