HBO Max has canceled J. J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan's crime thriller series Duster after one season. The show debuted on May 15, 2025, and concluded with its Season 1 finale on July 3, 2025. Days after the finale, Deadline reports that the show will not return for Season 2.
In a statement to Deadline, HBO Max announced Duster's cancellation:
“While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of Duster, we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, and our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television.''
They added:
“We are tremendously proud of this series led by Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson and we thank them along with our cast and crew for their incredible collaboration and partnership.”
Produced by Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television, the show starred Josh Holloway, Rachel Hilson, and Keith David in the main roles and was set in 1972.

HBO Max cancels Duster after Season 1
The show followed the FBI's first black female agent as she attempted to take down a major crime syndicate boss in the Southwest, with the assistance of a getaway driver in a 1970 Plymouth Duster.
While the show managed to gain a spot in the Top 10 on HBO Max and was a regular on the list, it failed to enter the Nielsen Top 10 for streaming originals. In addition, it barely scratched the surface of Luminate’s list of Top 50 streaming originals by making it to the last spot (50) in its fourth week.
Duster was also able to garner about 92% (from critics) and 83% (from audiences) on Rotten Tomatoes, but it failed to create waves in streaming and was thus cancelled by HBO Max after just one season.
In addition to Holloway, Hilson, and David, the show also boasted a talented ensemble of actors, including Sydney Elisabeth, Benjamin Charles Watson, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, and Greg Grunberg.
While the show failed to match the audience's expectations, Warner Bros. Television praised the creators, cas,t and crew's efforts in building an intense crime series:
“Those characters were brought to life by a wonderful team led by Josh, Rachel, and an extremely talented ensemble cast, along with an expert crew behind the scenes. We are incredibly proud of the show, and while we wish this journey could continue, we are thankful to our partners at HBO Max for the opportunity to tell Jim and Nina’s story.”
They also praised Abrams and Morgan for their commendable partnership on Duster and for creating textured characters that showed potential, but their journey had to be cut short.
You can catch Season 1 of the show on HBO Max.
