The HBO Harry Potter show is moving along steadily, and the official casting news has now settled that Warwick Davis will be back as Professor Filius Flitwick. Davis, who appeared as Griphook in the original Harry Potter films, is the first film series actor to return in the revamped TV series.
Production began in July 2025 at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios, with additional filming to occur in Brittany, France. The series will be released on HBO and Max in early 2027, but the release date is currently tentative. The series is a multi-year endeavor that will bring J.K. Rowling's seven books to the big screen.
Warwick Davis returns as Flitwick
Warwick Davis's return has been welcomed with grins by many of those who remember his work as Professor Flitwick in the initial movies. Warwick Davis also portrayed Griphook in the movies, thus becoming one of the actors with more than one character within the Harry Potter films.
His casting provides continuity between the initial movie version and the current series.

These casting picks set the foundation for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone adaptation in season one.
Production and structure
The HBO series is organized as a literal adaptation of the novels. Initial rumblings suggested season-for-every-book, with an eight-episode first season to kick things off.
Newer news positions the show as spanning around 10 years, which implies that the actual format will change over time. The goal is to incorporate all of the books that are published during its run.
Creative leadership
The series is created by Francesca Gardiner as showrunner and executive producer. J.K. Rowling will serve as an executive producer and Mark Mylod will serve as director of the series.
The series will be shot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, where the first Harry Potter movies were produced as well, with location shooting extending out to Brittany.
The series on HBO brings together familiar talent with a new cast and a decade-long vision to retell the wizarding world's story to the masses in a new way.
