The iconic franchise of Harry Potter is coming back to the screens, but not without some rampant speculation, optimism, and fan-made stories, one of which has now been conclusively disproven.
Ever since HBO declared a complete reboot of the movies into a series, fans have been debating about the cast, including whether original actors would resume their roles or take up new ones. The most talked-about speculation was around Tom Felton, who portrayed Draco Malfoy, and the chance of him playing Draco's father, Lucius Malfoy.
This fan theory, in particular, really took off. Felton, now almost forty, seemed like an obvious choice for Lucius with his sinister and aristocratic features. It made sense both from a nostalgic perspective and in light of his long association with the role of Draco and his ability to portray morally complex characters.
Speculation only mounted after his return to the Wizarding World in the Cursed Child stage production. Nonetheless, a recent casting update from HBO confirms that Johnny Flynn will portray Lucius Malfoy, officially scrapping the fan-favorite theory.
Johnny Flynn cast as Lucius Malfoy

Flynn is recognized for his roles in Ripley, The Outfit, and Operation Mincemeat. He will assume the role previously held by Jason Isaacs in the film series. While this news may disappoint those hoping for Felton’s return, Flynn’s casting is quite sensible from a creative perspective for the reboot.
It seems that HBO is determined to put a different spin on the Wizarding World and move away from the iconic films, which are now considered legacy materials. With Flynn, the series is still able to maintain that creative distance and fresh reinterpretation of the character.
Fan-casting Felton as Lucius offers more than mere nostalgia; it served as an emotional link connecting the two phases of Harry Potter. Still, not leaning into that nostalgia allows the series to avoid the pitfall of becoming a hodgepodge of old and new. Instead, it can forge its own identity, something that Gardiner and Mylod appear to be working toward.
Could Tom Felton still return in another role for the new Harry Potter?

Though the fantasy of Felton playing Lucius is shattered, there’s still some hope left for fans wanting to see him reprise a role in the franchise. It is still rumored that he could appear in a cameo or adopt a completely new character.
Some even speculate that he will play a version of Voldemort or Tom Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets storyline. This does seem highly improbable, however, due to HBO’s dedication to consistent, realistic casting for these pivotal characters.
The previous film installments utilized different actors to represent Voldemort's character in different stages. However, the new series will most likely avoid such fragmentation. Given that the narrative will extend over several seasons, the creative team will probably strive for consistency, which diminishes the likelihood that a famous actor from the earlier films will be cast in such a radical role again.
A necessary move for the reboot’s success

HBO’s casting decisions for the new adaptation, including recasting roles heavily linked to the original films, seem beneficial in the long run. Reboots are often created with great care as they try to preserve elements from the originals while crafting something new.
The Harry Potter franchise can now establish its own tone unclouded by the film cast’s legacy. The reintroduction of prominent characters played by new actors allows the audience to move forward with the story without any persistent thoughts about the earlier adaptations.
So while the door for Felton’s return to his Harry Potter roots hasn’t been lost entirely, his absence from the primary cast list is a clear message that the reboot isn’t a cash-grab—there is genuine intent to explore new depths of the Harry Potter universe.
