Elizabeth Holmes blew everyone away with her role in HBO Max's Love & Death, a miniseries where she played Candy Montgomery. For the uninitiated, Montgomery is a Texan woman who allegedly murdered her neighbor as she was having an affair with the latter's husband. The miniseries was available exclusively on HBO Max until now.
The crime drama miniseries dropped on Netflix because of a licensing deal between WBD and Netflix. This move means that the miniseries might be accessible in countries where HBO Max isn't available.
What does Love & Death's availability on Netflix mean for its accessibility on HBO Max?
Love & Death dropping on Netflix has supposedly not affected its place on HBO Max. Therefore, you can watch all seven episodes on both streaming platforms. The Elizabeth Olsen-led HBO Max project is the second miniseries in the 2020s, as the Jessica Biel-headlined Candy streamed on Hulu a year earlier.
Despite being the second project to explore the subject matter and frequent comparisons with Candy, Love & Death received both acclaim and award nominations.
"This riveting drama, written by David E. Kelley and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, tells the true story of Candy and Pat Montgomery and Betty and Allan Gore – two churchgoing couples enjoying their smalltown Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe."
What is the HBO Max series about?
The show recounts the Candy Montgomery case, which shook Wylie, a Dallas suburb. The miniseries begins in 1978 and builds towards Candy's shocking actions in the fourth episode, "Do No Evil", set on the night of June 13, 1980. However, the first three episodes build towards Betty's death in episode 4.
For those who don't know, Candy and Betty's husband, Allan Gore, had an affair for approximately eight months between December 1978 and October 1979. Allan and Betty's marriage was struggling in 1978 as he began an affair with Candy. However, he ended the affair with Candy in October 1979, when his relationship with Betty started to heal.
But Betty did suspect something between her husband and Candy. That's why she confronted Candy on the night of June 13, 1980, as the latter visited the Gore residence. Betty supposedly attacked Candy with the axe when the latter confirmed her affair with Allan. But as we already know, Candy fatally attacked Betty with the same axe.
Candy managed to convince the jury that she killed Betty out of self-defence during the trial, and the jury declared her not guilty on October 30, 1980. Love & Death EP and director Lesli Linka Glatter said this about the entire ordeal in a May 2023 Deadline interview:
“It is certainly a case where real life…is much stranger than fiction. If the story wasn’t true, I don’t think you could tell this story….And we tried to stay very true to the facts of the story.”
Elizabeth Olsen also revealed what she saw in the story in the same interview:
“There’s a lot of decision-making that doesn’t make any kind of logical sense, and so I found it interesting to try and figure out what that tension or that grip is that makes all these weird choices make sense.”
The Elizabeth Olsen-led Love & Death is currently available on Netflix and HBO Max.
