The Gilded Age Season 3 is all about romance, new money, social class, and the desire to rise in the social ladder. In each season, we have seen a focus on romance and a set of couples who keep the storyline going. The Gilded Age Season 3 brings forth Gladys’ story and her path to finding the perfect partner.
Like most people, Gladys also wanted to get married for love. However, her mother did not prefer this idea. Gladys’ mother, Bertha, had a completely different thought. She wanted to use Gladys’ marriage as a strategic move. She understands that if Gladys gets married to the Duke, she will be able to bring many changes with the power of her crown.
However, will her thoughts be able to bring happiness to Gladys? Will she be able to find a loving husband and be happy in her marriage? These are the questions that have been haunting us viewers, right after we watched The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 5.
Doubts about Gladys’ marriage in The Gilded Age Season 3
As we have seen in the previous seasons, couples had their own happy marriages. Gladys also wanted the same thing for herself. However, her mother’s intervention in the choice of partner for Gladys casts a shadow of doubt on whether she will actually be happy or not.
Due to her mother’s persistence, Gladys gets married to Hector, the Duke of Buckingham. Initially, Hector’s behavior towards Gladys left much doubt about his intentions.
Especially at the beginning of The Gilded Age Season 3, we can see that Hector wants to marry Gladys because of his own personal reasons as well. He wants to upkeep his castle, which Gladys can help him with.
This already begins to raise doubts in the minds of the viewers. Along with it, Hector’s behavior on the first night of their honeymoon also shows us that he did not care about Gladys’ hesitance.

It is definitely not great to see him make Gladys fulfill her marital duties. However, mention should be made about how the era is significant in this respect. The time on which The Gilded Age Season 3 is based is a time when women were often subjugated and suppressed.
An aspect which is very significant in depicting whether a person would be able to keep his wife happy is how he is able to stand up for her. During a time when women’s opinions were often dismissed, if the husband is able to take a stand for his wife, things definitely take a positive turn.
However, in the fifth episode of The Gilded Age Season 3, things do not look so promising because of Hector’s behaviour towards Gladys.
Lady Sarah, the Duke’s sister, becomes quite a difficult hindrance in the path of Gladys and Hector’s happily ever after. In The Gilded Age Season 3, we see that after the newlywed couple returns to England to Hector’s castle, things take a bad turn for Gladys.
Gladys’ kind nature is quite the contrast to that of Lady Sarah, who does not like Gladys and looks down upon her. Though Lady Sarah pretends to help Gladys become a Duchess suitable for Hector, her actions are far more condescending.
She even lets Adelheid go because she thinks Gladys needs to change completely and leave her past behind. Adelheid was the only source of comfort for Gladys in this new place with all the new people. However, Lady Sarah’s bitterness towards her makes her suffer constantly.
There are certain moments that make us think the Duke is not a harsh character but rather a sweet person, especially in his conversation with Gladys in The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 3. He comforts her and wishes to be happy with her. This definitely is a great sign that if the Duke is able to dismiss his sister, then he and Gladys can make it work.
His only task now is to stand up for Gladys. As can be seen in the later episodes, he rarely speaks up against his sister’s wrongdoings towards Gladys. If this continues, then they might not end up in a happily ever after situation. However, if the Duke finally understands Gladys’ situation and that his sister is actually creating trouble for them, then things can definitely turn around.
There are still 3 more episodes left for this season, so let’s hope Gladys can get her happily ever after.
