Happy tears were shed after the Heated Rivalry finale, when Shane (Hudson Williams) and Ilya (Connor Storrie) spent some much-needed quality time at the Cottage, eating burgers, listening to Canadian 'wolf birds', sitting in silence by the fire and confessing their love for one another. While Rachel Reid fans are still not over this perfect conclusion to Shane and Ilya's adorable story, Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie were equally emotional while filming the final scene for HBO Max's queer hockey romance.

A recently released behind-the-scenes video revealed that Shane and Ilya's moment by the fire (from the finale) was the final scene Williams and Storrie filmed for the debut season. As creator Jacob Tierney calls 'Cut', the actors got visibly emotional and expressed their gratitude on the last day of filming.

In a recent interview with Variety, Storrie opened up about his experience while filming 'The Cottage', the final entry in Heated Rivalry Season 1 and the couple's 'happy ending':

''It’s kind of the episode where there’s officially a catharsis.''

More on this in our story.

Connor Storrie breaks down the Heated Rivalry finale, 'The Cottage'

While Heated Rivalry followed Shane and Ilya's passionate and decade-spanning secret fling in different cities, the final entry saw them spending some quiet moments at the Cottage. The final entry, which Storrie called his 'favorite to film,' was in sharp contrast with the pace and intensity of the rest of the season, which only highlighted the couple's development and emotional maturity throughout the years.

Dissecting the slow aesthetic of the Heated Rivalry finale (from the initial intense episodes), Storrie said to Variety:

''There’s this kind of cool crescendo where it was so fast and rapid — the editing, the writing – with so much energy upfront, and then it kind of lands and we’re just two people in a house for a few days. As an actor, that’s where a lot of the cool acting moments are, where we really get to sit in some of those scenes for a long, long time.''

While the HBO Max show is being hailed for Williams and Storrie's steamy chemistry and their on-screen intimate moments, Storrie sees Reid's story about two people falling in love, as he added:

''People don’t realize because of all the intimate scenes but this story really is about people falling in love at a distance. To finally see that come together, there’s a catharsis.''

The Heated Rivalry finale sets a hopeful future for Shane and Ilya

Heated Rivalry Season 1 might be over but Shane and Ilya's story is just getting started. After taking a brave first step by coming out to Shane's parents, the couple still has plenty of hurdles ahead when the show returns for its second chapter. However, for now, Connor Storrie is celebrating the couple's happy ending, as they drive together into the sunset in Shane's car.

Discussing Tierney's version of 'happy ending' for the couple, Storrie said:

''You get to kind of breathe. They get to be normal on some level, which is what Jacob talks about when he says the “happy ending...” whatever that looks like afterwards, they’re like, “We’re going to sign up for it. We’re signed up and we’re locked in.”

Heated Rivalry Season 2 will adapt Reid's sixth and final book in the Game Changers series, titled The Long Game, which will follow Shane and Ilya as they navigate their hockey careers and the emotional weight of their secret relationship.

You can stream all six episodes of Heated Rivalry on HBO Max.
