One of the most disturbing and persistent puzzles in American true crime history is examined in the new Hulu docuseries, Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit. Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit consists of three episodes.

Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit revisits the disappearance of Jodi Huisentruit, a 27-year-old morning news anchor who vanished from the parking lot of her Mason City, Iowa, apartment complex early on June 27, 1995. Almost three decades later, her case is still open.

Using previously unreleased papers, direct interviews, and newly unsealed documents, Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit looks at how a young journalist just vanished, leaving behind a crime scene packed with personal effects but no definite answers.

Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit compiles a thorough timeline of that day through closely linked episodes, examines the hypotheses around her kidnapping, and raises queries regarding whether significant evidence or people of interest were ignored.

The true story behind Her Last Broadcast: The Abduction of Jodi Huisentruit

A promising career cut short

In broadcast journalism, Jodi Huisentruit was a rising celebrity. She was born in Long Prairie, Minnesota, and had a job as the morning anchor at KIMTTV in Mason City, Iowa. Known for her discipline and consistency, this former flight attendant and top-notch athlete never missed a broadcast until the morning she vanished.

She lived alone in a tiny flat a mile from the newsroom. She overslept for her 3 a.m. call time on June 27, 1995. She answered and said she was on her way when a coworker called her at 4 a.m. That was her last communication from anyone. Her coworkers asked for a welfare check at 6 a.m. when she had still not shown up for work.

The scene of disappearance

When police arrived at Jodi's apartment complex, they discovered evident traces of a conflict in the parking area. Still present was her red Mazda Miata. Her car was strewn with her stuff: heels, a hairdryer, hairspray, and earrings. The bent driver-side door remained the key, as though someone had snatched her mid-action.

Drag markings on the pavement pointed to her forced capture. Though the complex had no security cameras and no witnesses, neighbors reported hearing a scream around 4:30 a.m. that morning. CNN reports no blood was discovered on the scene, and her house bore no indications of forced entry.

Who exactly was John Vansice?

The inquiry focused fast on John Vansice. Though reportedly close to Jodi, he was 22 years older than her at 49. The night before she vanished, he said they viewed a birthday video jointly.

Though never officially named a suspect, Vansice remained under scrutiny for decades. CBS2 Iowa reported on a 2017 warrant that included GPS sensors installed on his car; he provided the FBI DNA, fingerprints, and palm prints. He kept his innocence till his death in December 2024, and no accusations were brought.

Adding to the riddle, police discovered a palm print on Jodi's automobile that had never been linked to any known person. Wikipedia confirms that other unnamed people, including a recent boyfriend Jodi had just started seeing, were also investigated, even though no suspects have ever been officially charged.

Red flags before the abduction

Months before her disappearance, Jodi had expressed worry about her safety. She reported being followed by someone in a white pickup truck to the police in October 1994. Having also attended a self-defense course just the day before her abduction, she informed a friend she was changing her phone number because of harassing calls.

Her work left her extremely visible, and her regular early morning regimen may have left her exposed. KARE11 reports she even kept pepper spray in her vehicle. Jodi's remains have never been found despite three decades of study. The reward for information helping to restore her was raised to $50,000 in 2023.

In 2024, police responded to a new tip and searched a rural location in Winsted, Minnesota. Just animal bones were discovered. Every year, Jodi's family and community hold vigils; her story is still in the national awareness.
