The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, "Through the Valley", brought one of the most heartbreaking moments from the game to the small screen. The episode's last act adapted the scene in which Abby murders Joel. The episode closes with Joel's covered body being dragged on the snow towards Jackson for his funeral. The second episode was devastating for Tommy and Jackson.

After the airing of the second episode, HBO released the preview for The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 3, which teased the possible plotlines for the upcoming episode, expected to air on April 27, 2025.

In this preview above, we can see Ellie mourning Joel. A major development here is that Ellie learns the name of Joel's killer and discovers that they are former Fireflies, a part of the WLF. We also see Tommy mourning his brother, so we can count on him helping Ellie, as she decides to make good on her promise of getting revenge on Abby and her crew.

In the upcoming episodes and even the next season, we are going to see Ellie getting her hands dirty as she brutally murders each and every member of Abby's crew. With these scenes, the show will drive home the point of the game and series that Craig Mazin put forth in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on April 22, 2025:

“The point of this story is that the entire concept of protagonist is flawed. The entire concept of villain is flawed. Our way of processing the world through heroes and villains is a mistake. It ends up creating these barriers between people that shouldn’t be there.”
