Apple TV's Hijack premiered on June 28, 2023, and quickly became a hit among viewers for its intense and gripping airplane hijack storyline. What made the Idris Elba-starring thriller series different from other similar shows was the motive of the hijackers, as it was planned to shake up the stock market and didn't have any religious or other similar motive.

After the immense success of Season 1, the Apple TV series is set to return for Season 2. This time, Elba's Sam Nelson will be dealing with a tricky situation in the Berlin underground train system rather than an airplane. Additionally, there will be several crucial differences in Elba's character due to the traumatic situations he faced in the previous season. Director and co-creator Jim Field Smith also shared with Deadline his wish to see a different version of the beloved character, Sam Nelson, and stated:

"Our whole guiding principle with Sam was that I wanted him to start Season 2 as a completely different character from the Sam Nelson you’ve left behind."

In Hijack Season 1, Elba's character, Sam Nelson, a business negotiator, gets entangled in a hijacking situation on board a flight from Dubai to London. He uses his exceptional negotiating skills to contain the situation from becoming violent and protect everyone on board.

From dealing with the hijackers and trying to find ways to inform the ground staff about the struggle, and encouraging the other passengers to fight back when needed, Sam Nelson emerged as a hero after the seven-hour journey.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Idris Elba and Jim Field both shared that we will see a 'completely different' Sam Nelson in the upcoming series. While Elba teased that his character will be both 'physically and psychologically different,' Field Smith teased more and stated that the change in the character will be visible from the very first moment of Season 2.

To add to his previous comment, he said:

"In the very first frame when the camera resolves on him this season, you’re supposed to think, ‘What the hell’s happened to this guy?’"

In another interview with Radio Times, the director further opened up about Season 2 and stated that while the upcoming series might share some kind of connection with Season 1, there will be a huge difference when it comes to Sam Nelson. He said:

"I think for Idris - not to put words into your mouth - but for you to come back and do it again, Sam had to be in a completely different position emotionally."

He further added:

"We wanted to see how far we could push him. What would push Sam to the extreme? Because that’s what we’re kind of exploring - how far would you go? How far would anybody go?"

Therefore, while we will see Sam Nelson being put in another tricky and dangerous situation, there will be some crucial changes in the character arc of Idris Elba's Nelson. With a new destination, a new travel mode, and a new threat, Season 2 will premiere on January 14, 2026.
