According to an exclusive report by Deadline, Disney+ has decided to drop the Pilot for Holes, the highly anticipated gender-swapped reimagining of Louis Sachar’s 1998 eponymous novel, which was also made into a 2003 film.Disney Branded Entertainment ordered the Pilot and a writers' room was commissioned. However, according to recent reports, the network has decided not to go forward with the project.Alina Mankin was one of the writers and executive producers on the Holes Pilot, with Liz Phang set to serve as the showrunner and an executive producer. At this juvenile detention camp, he is mysteriously asked by the Warden to dig holes. The reimagined gender-swapped Pilot was set to follow Shay Rudolph's character, a teenage girl who is wrongfully convicted and suffers a similar fate to that of Stanley from the film.In addition to Rudolph, the supporting cast for the Pilot included Greg Kinnear, Aidy Bryant, Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels and Maeve Press.While Sachar's novel starts as a suspenseful crime comedy story, with a mysterious plot, Stanley eventually discovers his true story and his family's connection with Camp Green Lake. In an earlier interview with Variety, Drew Goddard of Goddard Textiles, who also served as an executive producer on the Pilot, revealed that the series' idea was suggested by his mother, a schoolteacher. Goddard revealed:“She always knows what ‘the kids’ are into long before everyone else does. ‘Holes’ was the first book she suggested to me – this was back in the late ‘90s – and she was positive it was going to be a phenomenon. It feels good to bring it full circle for Mrs. Goddard and her sixth grade class.”Sachar's novel won both the National Book Award and Newbery Medal when it was published in 1998 and sold a million copies, becoming a popular title, especially among teenagers. The 2003 film, starring Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, LaBeouf, Henry Winkler and Siobhan Fallon Hogan, further popularized the title and it became a cult classic.
