Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison

As mentioned, the main officer who is surveilling the Marine officer rescued after 8 years is Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes. Struggling with bipolar disorder, her journey requires her to make some morally complex decisions. She believes that the marine officer has been “turned” by al-Qaeda during his eight years in captivity. She is seen bending protocols for the nation's safety while her pursuit grows into an obsession as she risks her career for the same.

Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody

Next is Nicholas Brody, the US Marine officer who returned to his nation after 8 years of captivity. He was earlier presumed dead; however, now the country hails him as a war hero, and he begins reintegrating into family and public life. His character raises high-stakes questions that form the major conflict in the show. Is Brody traumatized or radicalized? Victim or threat?

Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson

Carrie's mentor in Homeland is Saul, who is also the CIA's most respected senior intelligence officer. He is portrayed to be calm, morally grounded, and often finds himself oscillating between Carrie's instincts and the CIA's bureaucratic machine. In Season 1, he is seen balancing the professional responsibility of him as a member of intelligence while also maintaining loyalty to Carrie as the intelligence work ties him ethically.

She is the one dealing with Brody's erratic behaviour, navigating the fragile reconstruction of a family long accustomed to her leadership. Her character embodies the cost of war and suffering.

Alongside these primary cast members, Homeland Season 1 also features David Harewood as David Estes. He is portrayed to the CIA Counterterrorism Director and Carrie’s boss.
