Homestuck is officially in the making, and viewers can already have a peek! The viral internet comic by Andrew Hussie is being given a pilot episode courtesy of Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano, creator of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. This is among the largest adaptations the series has received ever since it initially premiered on the web back in 2009.

Homestuck, the animated series, will be a product of Medrano's SpindleHorse animation firm, and its pilot drops this September on her YouTube channel. Although in its early stages, it has already caused ripples based on its cast, featuring some of the major players of the animation world.

The project in detail

The pilot for the new Homestuck is being produced by SpindleHorse's Australian branch, SpindleRoo. Official announcements tell us that it is currently a one-off pilot; that is, no order for a series has been commissioned as yet.

September will be the month of release for the pilot, and it will be posted online for free. This is in order to allow the fans of the original webcomic and potential viewers to see it without restrictions on platforms.

Pilot creative team

Homestuck animated pilot is led by a team of seasoned creatives. Vivienne Medrano is executive producing, while Skye Henwood will direct and write the episode. Mel Shin will be the storyboard director, with Ben Jones as the animation director, Hone as the art director, and Richard Horvitz as the voice director.

These all come with the tradition of animation, storyboarding, and voice acting that has come before a line of successes.

Voice cast and characters

Much of the drawing power of the Homestuck pilot is going to be the voice cast. There are a fair few recognizable voice actors present here, such as Toby "Radiation" Fox, game designer of Undertale, playing John Egbert. Rose Lalonde will be brought to life by Cherami Leigh, who has a huge list of credits in anime and video games.

Brandon Winckler plays Karkat Vantas, Adam McArthur plays Dave Strider, and Colleen O'Shaughnessey plays Jade Harley. The casting seems to give each character's personality and traits from the original comic book bang on.

Background on Homestuck

Homestuck was a comic strip that ran from 2009 through 2016 on MS Paint Adventures. Homestuck was written by Andrew Hussie and incorporates text, images, animation, and interactivity to tell the tale of the adventure of four kids, John, Rose, Dave, and Jade, who play a game of Sburb.

Sburb then assists them in creating and populating whole universes and solving problems that involve science fiction, fantasy, and surreal humor. Complimented for its complex story and thick lore, Homestuck gained a devoted online fan base throughout the course of its first series.

SpindleHorse and Vivienne Medrano's contribution

SpindleHorse Toons, founded by Vivienne Medrano in 2018, is renowned for creating original animated series such as Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. The firm possesses a robustly distinctive visual style and is character-driven in storytelling.

With Homestuck, SpindleHorse is stepping outside the usual realm of producing an entirely original series and is more trying its hand at an existing property. SpindleRoo, the company's Australian production branch, is also rightly credited with the pilot, which indicates some sort of international partnership in the animation production.

Current status and future potential

There has been no announcement yet regarding confirmation that the Homestuck pilot animation will be made into a full-length series. Whether that's feasible or not is to be decided on the basis of how the audience takes it, television viewership figures, and interest from distributors or streaming sites.

Otherwise, they'll have to wait and see the pilot debut in September, Homestuck's first-ever appearance as officially produced animation with a professional cast and crew.
