Netflix has finally dropped Wednesday Season 2 Part 2, and Jenna Ortega's titular Addams is back for another thrilling ride, which concludes with a big reveal for the renewed Season 3.
After being thrown down the Willow Hill building by Tyler's Hyde form, our protagonist wakes up from a coma and is greeted by her new spirit guide, Principal Larissa Weems. After four episodes of hunting down Tyler and trying to save her friend Enid (who went full alpha werewolf in the finale), Morticia gifted her daughter Aunt Ophelia Frump’s journal, which led to a chilling reveal.
As our protagonist read from the pages of her long-lost aunt's journal, she had a chilling vision of Ophelia, locked away in Grandmama Hester Frump’s basement, repeatedly scrawling these words on a wall:
''Wednesday must die”
Co-creator Al Gough and co-showrunner Miles Millar described this shocking reveal in the Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 finale as:
“Hopefully fans are very surprised and very satisfied by the finale. “That reveal is hopefully a nice breadcrumb that leads audiences to wonder about Season 3...''
While the Addams family assumed that Aunt Ophelia was 'missing,' the finale confirmed that she is being held in her mother's basement (likely by Hester) and plotting against her niece's murder.
More on this in our story.
Breaking down the Aunt Ophelia reveal in the Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 finale
While we certainly knew that all mentions of Aunt Ophelia throughout Wednesday Season 2 would materialize into a big secret in the finale, the actual reveal was quite chilling.
Throughout the sophomore season, the narrative was heavily laden with allusions to Aunt Ophelia, who went missing twenty years ago. Quite similar to her niece, Ophelia also had impressive psychic powers. However, she manipulated them too far and produced the same black tears as the titular protagonist, which resulted in Grandmama Hester locking her away in Willow Hill for good.
While the Addams family believed that Ophelia was missing, it was hinted that the fellow Raven is still alive and likely locked somewhere in Willow Hill. However, the chilling final moments in the Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 finale revealed that Aunt Ophelia is not only alive but also wants her niece dead. This big reveal certainly dropped a huge bombshell on all fans, who never in their wildest dreams thought that Aunt Ophelia would turn out to be a foe to her niece.
Additionally, the reveal also suggests that Grandmama Hester intentionally hid the secret about Aunt Ophelia from the Addams family, which might strain her relationship with the family and her granddaughter. Millar further teased that the upcoming season will further explore Ophelia's relationship with the Addams family:
“That’s definitely something we explore in Season 2. How does Ophelia fit into the Addams family and what will she bring?”
Wednesday Season 2 Part 2: Exploring the mother-daughter's evolving relationship in the finale
Aunt Ophelia was not just an important mystery for our protagonist but also for her sister, Morticia, who feared that her daughter's connection with her sister might result in the same fate. Her worst fears were partly realized in the Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 finale, when her daughter had a psychic vision about Ophelia after reading her journal.
In the Season 2 finale, Morticia finally accepted the fact that Wednesday has grown up and deserves to know the dark truths about her family, especially about Aunt Ophelia. In a surprising twist, she gifts Ophelia's journal to her daughter, an action that Millar described as:
“The journal is really this sign of detente, acceptance, and embracing that Wednesday’s growing up. It’s a moment of trust. It’s a big moment for Morticia...''
With Ophelia established as the next big foe for the upcoming season, the softening relationship between Morticia and her daughter will become important. While Wednesday has had the advantage of her psychic powers against all her previous enemies, Ophelia will be the most challenging, as she is an equal foe. A fellow Raven, Ophelia, is not only related to our protagonist by blood, but their shared powers, connection, and psychic visions hint that Season 3 will be the most challenging for Morticia's daughter yet.
Additionally, the titular character's vision in the Season 2 Part 2 finale also hints that her psychic powers are gradually returning, which is a welcome change. Since Ortega's character surely cannot go against Ophelia with glitching powers, Millar teased that the Season 2 finale instills hope that her powers will be back in Season 3.
