Created by Matt Charman, Hostage, is a British political thriller miniseries that is also written by Charman. Directed by Isabelle Sieb and Amy Neil, the show features Julie Delpy, Suranne Jones, James Cosmo, and others.
Hostage premiered on Netflix on August 21, 2025 and has five episodes. The show is about an international summit between the French and the British leaders. But things go upside down when the husband of the British Prime Minister is kidnapped and the French President is blackmailed.
While Suranne Jones plays the role of Abigail Dalton, the British Prime Minister, Julie Delpy plays the role of Vivienne Toussaint, the French President. The miniseries has been a tense watch and the finale episode of the show ends on a surprising note.

Hostage ending explained: A flashback that changed everything

Hostage has been a show full of twists and turns. From a bombing in 10 Downing Street to the reveal that someone bigger is at the helm of wanting to disarm Abigail through her family. With so many cliffhangers in the penultimate episode, the finale episode of Hostage is set up for an explosive finale.
The finale begins with a flashback where Abigail and Alex are hosting a birthday party for Sylvie. The party is interrupted by a phone call, which Abigail takes in private. During that time, Abigail was a junior minister at the Foreign Office. The phone call tells her that there is a tense situation in Belize and they need an immediate decision over the evacuation of British troops. As Abigail is the most senior minister currently, her clearance is needed to leave behind the Belizean locals who have helped the British army. Abigail knows that her decision could result in the death of the locals, but she decides that the British troops should be evacuated.
Hostage: The fight between Abigail, Sylvie, Shagan, and Livingstone

The scene then shifts to the present and Abigail and her family are rushed into an underground bunker. While Abigail is fine, Vivienne has died in the blast. It is revealed that General Livingstone has been plotting for months to take down Abigail and though he did not want her dead, he did want her out of the way. Alex and Sylvie have to be relocated to a safe place with Matheo in tow. Abigail also assembles her team and realizes that this was always a coup plot.
Soon, the crossover between Shagan and Livingstone is revealed and Abigail recognizes Shagan as the person behind the rogue bombing. Shagan was actually a soldier in Belize that was downgraded due to depression. Further, Livingstone was the commanding officer of Shagan in Belize.
Abigail confronts Livingstone and he reveals that he resents Abigail for her military budget cuts. Livingstone is placed in custody and at the hideout mansion, Shagan and Saskie break in and hold Alex, Sylvie, and Matheo hostage. Shagan forces Alex to call Abigail and she arrives, Saskia finds out that Matheo made a silent 999 call, which leads to a fight. Sylvie runs free, a police unit arrives, Saskia hands the phone to Matheo and runs away.
On the other hand, Abigail sees Shagan holding Alex at knifepoint and he reveals that he wanted Abigail dead as his fiancée was a local translator in Belize and she was left behind and was shot and killed while pregnant. The police arrives and Alex tries to get the knife out of Shagan’s hands. Soon, Sylvie arrives with the gun that she stole from Saskia. She points it at Shagan and he admits to killing her grandfather, which leads to Sylvie shooting him. Soon, Sylvie is handcuffed and Shagan takes his last breath. Towards the end, a news reports mentions that Vivienne has died in the explosion at Downing Street and Shagan has also died.
