The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 is hours away from release, and a newly released clip has confirmed the return of Johanna Constantine. Played by Jenna Coleman, the character was last seen in Season 1 helping Dream on a key part of his quest.

In this new footage, shared just ahead of the debut, Johanna is shown interacting once again with Dream—also known as Morpheus—suggesting that her story will continue in The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1.

The clip begins with Lady Johanna Constantine sitting in what appears to be a study. She is writing in a diary when a sound interrupts her. She immediately pulls out a gun and points it toward the noise. Dream then steps into view, identifying her by name and reminding her of a meeting they had five years earlier in a tavern.

Their exchange confirms that they have worked together in the past and that Morpheus has now returned with a new request. As she listens, Johanna asks whether the task is dangerous. This moment marks her confirmed return in The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1, as stated by Netflix and Coleman herself.

Johanna Constantine’s role in The Sandman

In The Sandman series, Johanna Constantine is an occult detective. She is a reinvention of the DC Comics figure John Constantine. Actress Jenna Coleman portrays both the contemporary Johanna and her eighteenth-century counterpart, Lady Johanna Constantine. In Season 1, Johanna assists Morpheus in reclaiming a lost magical artifact and copes with her own paranormal experiences.

As opposed to the comics, the Netflix series amplifies Johanna's character, making her more directly engaged in Dream's story. Neil Gaiman, creator of the comics, has been a supporter of this adaptation decision.

In earlier interviews, he indicated that this interpretation of Constantine had a strong narrative connection to the supernatural and mythological world of the show. Jenna Coleman has also discussed how she was interested in further developing the character. Her performance was received positively, and she brought a new element to Dream's life.

What sneak peek from The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 shows

The new clip from The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 was released online hours before the volume’s release. It features a scene set in a quiet study. Lady Johanna Constantine hears a sound and responds by drawing a gun. When Dream reveals himself, he calls her by name and reminds her of a meeting from five years ago. He says,

“You are Lady Johanna Constantine, are you not?”

She responds,

“Not one step further, sir.”

Dream then tells her,

“We are friends, you and I. We met in a tavern five years gone. You believed me to be a demon.”

She replies,

“I have learned differently since.”

Morpheus then shares that something valuable has been stolen from him.

He says it is a matter he cannot handle directly because “it is a family affair.” When she asks, “Is it dangerous?” the clip ends.

This scene suggests that Johanna will once again become part of Dream’s next mission, possibly related to the story arcs adapted from the comics, especially “Season of Mists” and “The Kindly Ones.”

Why Johanna’s return matters

Johanna Constantine’s comeback is important for both the plot and the fan base. Coleman’s character became a standout in Season 1, and her continued role builds on her popularity. She represents a link between the show’s grounded detective elements and its larger mythological themes.

Coleman confirmed her return in recent interviews and through her social media posts. She noted that The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 is more “visually stunning” and “cinematic” than the previous season. Her participation adds continuity to the series and supports the adaptation of complex storylines from Neil Gaiman’s source material.

Season 2 will also introduce other major characters from the comics, including new gods and members of the Endless. Dream’s interactions with mortals like Johanna help shape the themes of duty, identity, and consequence that are central to The Sandman universe.

The Sandman Season 2 Vol. 1 premieres on July 3, 2025, on Netflix.
