House of the Dragon Season 3 is expected to be released sometime in 2026. Filming for the third season began in March 2025, as announced by the show's official handles on social media. The third season is going to pick up from where season two left off. It is reportedly going to follow the journey of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen as she fights her half-brother, King Aegon Targaryen II, in order to be recognised as the rightful ruler of the seven kingdoms.

While season three is not arriving anytime soon, there is some good news for the House of the Dragon fans. As Redanian Intelligence reports, House of the Dragon Season 3 has wrapped up filming in Wales.

House of the Dragon Season 3 has wrapped filming in Wales

House of the Dragon Season 3 is officially in production and will adapt major events from George R. R Martin's novel Fire and Blood, particularly elaborating on the Battle of the Gullet, as well as the Dance of Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.

Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the third season will continue to explore the struggle between Queen Rhaenyra and her half-brother Aegon II. It all went wrong when, in episode 8, a delirious King Viserys, mistaking Alicent for Rhaenyra\, speaks of Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy in his last moments, calling Aegon 'the Prince that was Promised". But Alicent misinterpreted this statement (perhaps partially wanting to believe) that he meant their eldest son, Aegon II, should be the king.

Anyone who has watched the show knows that while the entire kingdom might have doubted a woman becoming the ruler, Viserys announced Rhaenyra as his heir when she was young, thus making her Queen of the Seven Kingdoms after him. But Alicent, guided by her father, Otto Hightower, made things worse when they made Aegon II challenge Rhaenyra's claim. What followed was a dynastic clash resulting in the full-scale war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Images from the set reveal that filming for House of the Dragon Season 3 began in March 2025, and as Redanian Intelligence reports, shooting in Wales was wrapped up on 3rd July 2025. However, there could be other locations where the locale for the filming might be shifted to, and thus, we don't know when the entire filming will be completed. Once it does, and the show goes into post-production, the creators will hopefully announce the release date soon.

House of the Dragon Season 3 will return with its main cast of the Greens and the Blacks. The Blacks include Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D'Arcy, Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, played by Harry Collett, Lady Baela Targaryen, played by Bethany Antonia, and Lady Rhaena Targaryen, played by Phoebe Campbell.

The Greens include Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, Otto Hightower, played by Rhys Ifans, King Aegon II Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, Prince Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell, Queen Helaena Targaryen, played by Phia Saban, among others.
