Matt Smith and James Norton were spotted shooting for House of the Dragon season 3
The recent set leaks confirm that House of the Dragon season 3 has begun filming. The show stars Matt Smith and James Norton are seen shooting in their entire military costumes, suggesting some possible large-scale battles in Westeros. Norton is likely to play a significant role in season 3 and will potentially be engaged in mounted combat. This aligns with the historical setting of "Fire & Blood", the book on which the show is based, and the ongoing conflict known as the Dance of the Dragons.
The leaked images also indicate scenes involving soldiers in full armour, riding horses, and combats. Therefore, with filming already underway and new cast members being added, Season 3 is shaping up to be a major escalation of the conflict, with more dragons, battles, and political intrigue. Filming reportedly began in late March 2025, with leaks confirming ongoing production in July. Some analysts speculate the season 3 release date as early to mid-2026, based on the scale of production needed for such ambitious sequences.
Filming has shifted from Wales to Hankley Common, where large-scale cavalry sequences are underway — likely part of the opening Battle of the Gullet, a major montage in the Dance of the Dragons arc will be shot there. The season is slated to consist of eight episodes, matching the format of Season 2.
Here are some key highlights of season 2 of House of the Dragon ahead of the release of its season 3
In season 2, we see Rhaenyra’s revenge for Lucerys when her agents assassinate Prince Jaehaerys, Aegon’s young son. Criston Cole, who is now the Hand of the King, leads a military campaign south and conquers Harrenhal. Aegon II is frustrated by the politics around and is determined to act boldly, while Aemond, with his dragon Vhagar, grows increasingly unstable and ambitious.
Rhaenyra struggles to maintain control over her supporters while grieving her son, in season 2, and later dies a heroic death in the epic Battle at Rook's Rest, riding Meleys into a trap set by Aegon and Aemond.
Just like Rhaenys, Season 2 of House of the Dragon witnessed some major deaths, such as Prince Jaehaerys being murdered by Blood & Cheese, along with Ser Arryk & Ser Erryk Cargyll dying fighting each other in the Red Keep during the twin duel.
