House of Guinness Episode 2 recap: Sir Benjamin’s will seals the siblings’ fates

Netflix's House of Guinness, Steven Knight's latest historical drama series, concluded with a literal fire in the premiere. Sean Rafferty, the loyal Guinness employee, spent the majority of Episode 2 investigating the fire and finding the arsonist who destroyed the titular cooperage.

House of Guinness Episode 2 featured the most important aspect of the iconic brewery, Sir Benjamin's will. Each one of the four siblings was eager to learn about their respective fates after their father's death. However, the final reading left them disappointed and they questioned their father's choices for their future.

Knight's latest series boasts impressive performances by an ensemble cast including Louis Partridge, Anthony Boyle, James Norton, Emily Fairn and Fionn O'Shea.

House of Guinness Episode 2 recap: The Guinness siblings discover their fates

Sir Benjamin's will was the high point of House of Guinness Episode 2. After spending the premiere in the aftermath of the Guinness' patriarch's death, it was finally time to discover the siblings' fate. As Aunt Agnes and the four siblings gathered to hear their late father's will, tensions and expectations were running high. As expected, the Guinness brewery was bequeathed to the eldest son, Arthur Guinness. However, he was entitled to only half of the brewery and the rest lies with his brother, Edward. Sir Benjamin's will stated that both Arthur and Edward are tied into a joint proprietary of the brewery. If either of them rejects this condition, they will lose everything left to their name.

Much to Anne's disappointment, her father did not leave him anything and she was advised to live off her husband. As for the last sibling, Benjamin Jr, his father left him a monthly stipend, thus ridding him of any responsibility of the family brewery. Additionally, charity donations and Anne's use of the Guinness family property were only allowed at Arthur's discretion.

House of Guinness Episode 2 recap: Sean Rafferty takes matters into his own hands

As seen in the House of Guinness premiere, Patrick Cochrane burned the Guinness barrels and Sean was determined to find the mole who opened the brewery's gates for the arsonist. He suspects the Cochrane siblings of the deed, as they are leaders of the local Irish Republican Brotherhood. His suspicions prove to be true and he confronts Patrick about the fire in the Guinness cooperage. He threatens him and asks the Cochrane siblings to stop spying on the Guinnesses.

Elsewhere, Sean Rafferty learns that Ellen Cochrane is in cahoots with Bonnie Champion, who knows the secret about Arthur's sexuality. After realizing that Ellen is the brains of this operation, he warns her to stay away from the Guinness siblings.

House of Guinness Episode 2 recap: Arthur's sexuality becomes a threat

The Guinness household changes in House of Guinness Episode 2, and Edward starts to behave like the man of the house. Since Edward is unhappy with his arrangement with Arthur, he asserts his power by ordering the servants in the house. He also asks Anne to consult Aunt Agnes and arrange for suitable matches (for marriage) for him and Arthur. Since Arthur's sexuality remains a great obstacle, he specifically asks her to find a 'suitable' woman for him.

Meanwhile, Arthur meets with his lover, Michael, in the park and tells him about the power-sharing arrangement with his brother. When Michael refuses to leave London and settle in Ireland with him, they part ways for good.

The final moments of House of Guinness Episode 2 saw Arthur and Edward meeting with Sean at the brewery. Rafferty tells the siblings that Ellen plans to use Arthur's sexuality to blackmail him into becoming a voice for Irish independence in Parliament. Edward is impressed and asks Sean to arrange his meeting with the Cochrane sister. He also warns him to stay away from Anne and end his scandalous relationship with his sister.
