House of the Dragon Season 2 concluded with Rhaenyra and Alicent reaching an understanding after a dramatic confrontation, but the ending montages might mean that they were a little too late.
Fans are more than excited for the third season of the Game of Thrones prequel, especially after the confirmation from showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal that the prequel will return for two final seasons and wrap up after the fourth season.
According to reports, House of the Dragon Season 3 has almost finished filming, and production is close to being wrapped by mid-October, meaning a 2026 release can be anticipated. Here's everything we know about the penultimate season.
House of the Dragon Season 3 will reportedly wrap production by October 2025

The House of the Dragon Season 2 finale was one for the books, as it ended with a wealth of cliffhangers for the next season. From Alicent shedding her queenly status and approaching Rhaenyra to Prince Daeron Targaryen, Viserys and Alicent's youngest son, and his blue dragon Tessarion flying over the Hightower forces and marching towards war, to Otto Hightower being imprisoned in a cell, fans of the show have a lot to look forward to in Season 3.
The show has been building up to the Battle of the Gullet for the entirety of the second season. Fans were hoping that since the second season was building up to the battle, one of the most important moments in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, the season would conclude with the Battle of the Gullet.
However, showrunner Condal has expressed that the creatives behind the show are trying to give the battle, one of the bloodiest in the franchise's history, the space and time it deserves, rather than ending the second season with the battle. All the troops marching at the final moments of the second season have solidified that House of the Dragon is aiming for complete justice when it comes to the Battle of the Gullet.
"We were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated – well, I would say maybe the second most anticipated action event of “Fire & Blood,” – trying to give it the time and the space that it deserved."
Well, in good news for fans, they don't have to wait long for one of the most anticipated moments in the history of Westeros to come to life, as in a recent conversation with The Wrap in September, Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent, revealed that production would most likely wrap up for Season three in October, marking the show for a 2026 release.
"We started in April, so we are done in October. We're over halfway and it's massive."
She also went on to add that the stakes are so much higher this season, and from the little that she has seen of House of the Dragon Season 3, fans have good reason to be excited and to wait for the release:
"I feel like I keep saying this, and hope people don’t get disappointed when they see it, but from what I’ve seen on Ryan Condal’s phone, they’ve really upped the ante,” she shared. “I mean, it is sort of mind-blowing what they’ve been able to do. That’s all I can say!” "
Cooke also revealed that no scripts have been prepared for Season 4, so there is a long time before the fan-favorite prequel House of the Dragon premieres with its final season, marking the end of the show in the franchise.
