In Interview with the Vampire, Claudia's death is what breaks Louis and changes his life forever. It is the saddest and most important moment in Louis de Pointe du Lac’s painful life story. Whether you know the book, the 1994 movie, or the AMC series, you know Claudia must die.
So, how does Claudia die in Interview with the Vampire? The method is always burning in sunlight, but the place and events around it are very different in each version. The vampire group in Paris always carries out the killing.
Claudia's death in Interview with the Vampire

The reason for the killing
In all versions of Interview with the Vampire, Claudia dies because of one big mistake: She tried to kill Lestat, the vampire who made her. Louis helped her with this attack, which broke the vampires’ Great Laws.
These laws strictly forbid any vampire from hurting another, especially the one who turned them. When Claudia and Louis arrive in Paris to find other vampires, the Paris coven catches them. This group runs the Théâtre des Vampires. The coven quickly decides to punish them for their crime.
In the 1976 book by Anne Rice, the coven held a clear, though unfair, trial. They found both Louis and Claudia guilty. The book shows that breaking this key law meant certain death in their world. The AMC series, Interview with the Vampire, makes the judgment a public show.
The coven turns the trial into a cruel performance watched by human crowds at the theater. The film, also named Interview with the Vampire, skips the trial completely and goes straight to the harsh punishment.
The way she burns
The main answer to how Claudia died is murder by sunlight. This is the worst punishment for a vampire. In the original novel, the coven separated Claudia and her friend Madeleine from Louis. They trapped the two female vampires inside a stone well just before the sun came up.
The sun hits them, and they burn to ash, dying completely. Later, Louis finds only Claudia's torn yellow dress in the well. This image shows his deep sadness.
The 1994 film used the same well but added a strong visual detail. Claudia, played by Kirsten Dunst, burns with Madeleine. The movie shows their bodies turning into a single statue made of ash before falling apart. This change makes the death look more dramatic, but the result is the same.
Death on stage in the AMC series

The recent TV series changed where the killing happened to make it more shocking. How does Claudia die in the series? The coven kills her right on the stage of the Théâtre des Vampires.
The vampire Santiago opens a roof window, sending deadly sunbeams straight onto Claudia and Madeleine. Louis has to watch the child he created burn away. Lestat, who survived Claudia’s attack, also watches and cries.
Louis is saved because the audience, perhaps told what to think by Armand, gives him a different punishment: Being sent away. The series, like the book, leaves only Claudia’s yellow dress on the floor, highlighting the sadness.
Claudia’s death is the moment that locks Louis into a life of loneliness and sadness forever. This final act confirms that the vampire rules must be followed. The character Claudia is never forgotten in later stories or episodes.
