Apple TV's Foundation Season 3 Episode 9, titled The Paths That Choose Us was released on September 5, 2025.
As the penultimate episode of the sci-fi series, the latest entry saw many exciting twists and turns in the galaxy, which will directly lead to the Second Foundation and Empire's explosive showdown with the Mule in the finale.
While Gaal captured New Terminus' Warden Fallon Greer, Dusk unleashed his weapon and destroyed many planets on the Galactic Council. However, away from all this action, Brother Day sat in Sunmaster's captivity in the Inheritance's pit, waiting for his execution. After Day's public trial in episode 8, he was sentenced to death by Sunmaster, even though the latter believed that Demerzel is the Inheritance's prophecized messiah.
Episode 9 finally revealed Day's fate, as he was freed from his captivity in the Mycrogen sector by Songbird. Both Songbird and Oceanglass believed Day's claim at his trial and helped him escape, following which he dramatically killed Sunmaster.

Why was Day sentenced by Sunmaster in Foundation Season 3?
Foundation Season 3 Episode 8 saw Day's public trial in front of the Inheritors, orchestrated by Sunmaster. Day is standing before the jury on behalf of the Empire, which inflicted unspeakable horrors on the robots, something which Demerzel also previously narrated.
While Day tried to communicate that Demerzel is the Inheritance's prophecized messiah-like figure, Daneel, Sunmaster maintained that Demerzel is an Empire clone.
However, since only the Sunmaster or the Brazen Head (the robotic head on Sunmaster's staff) can communicate with the Inheritors, Day's pleas were not heard in the court. At one point during his trial, Day almost proved that Demerzel is the Daneel figure, when he used her symphony as a trigger to activate Brazen Head's 'Initiate communication. Handshake signal' repeatedly, but Sunmaster changed the narrative quickly.
Day even accepted all the sinful things the Empire forced Demerzel to do and promised that she would be given the freedom to choose between the Empire and the Inheritors, and the jury will finally get their Daneel. However, when Sunmaster realized that Demerzel's return in the Inheritance would threaten his growing power, he tipped the narrative in his favour and ultimately sentenced Day to death.
All about Day's escape in Foundation Season 3 Episode 9
After Day was cunningly thrown into the pit by Sunmaster, the creatures started to eat into his flesh in Foundation Season 3 Episode 9. However, he was luckily rescued by Songbird, who saw through Sunmaster's deception in front of the Inheritors and believed Day's claims that their Daneel is none other than Demerzel.
While Oceanglass and Songbird advised Day to run from Trantor, he was adamant about confronting Sunmaster and giving Demerzel her rightful position in the Inheritance. The recent episode also highlighted how Day finally understood that their Cleonic dynasty had alienated Demerzel from her kind, and it was finally time to right this wrong and bring her back to her supposed position.
Foundation Season 3 Episode 9 saw Day finally reaching Sunmaster in his courtroom, with the intention of giving his Brazen Head to Demerzel. While Sunmaster tried to make a run from the courtroom, Day killed him in one swift motion and detached the robotic head from his staff.
He held the dismembered Brazen head and looked at everyone before making his way back to the palace. This iconic moment in Episode 9 suggests that Demerzel will now finally have the chance to lead the life she was destined for and rule over the Inheritance as their prophecized messiah, Daneel.
