Debby Duquette died of a fatal stroke in Grey's Anatomy's Season 2 finale episode titled Losing My Religion. The episode originally aired on May 15, 2006 on ABC. His death came as a shock to the viewers who were expecting him to recover after he received a new heart in a heart transplant.

Denny's plot was a rollercoaster from spending months in Seattle Grace Hospital after being diagnosed with viral cardiomyopathy to falling in love with Izzie. Safe to say it was love at first sight for Denny when he saw Izzie for the first time. The duo bonded over Scrabble Games and started hanging out in the hospital as a date.

Izzie took a rather controversial decision at this point when she cut Denny's LAVD wire to secure his transplant.

Soon Denny proposed to Izzie but when Izzie wasn't so sure, he proposed to her once again after the heart transplant. What could have been a happy ending for the both, resulted in a disaster. Izzie donned her pretty pink prom dress and was on her way to Denny when he suffered a fatal stroke and died.

The next scene showed Izzie in her prom dress lying beside Denny's lifeless body with Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol playing in the backdrop. Denny's death had a major impact on Izzie and her character arc as she struggled to cope with the loss.

In Grey's Anatomy Season 5 Episode 9 titled In the Midnight Hour, Izzie starts to hallucinate about Denny, and they even spend an intimate moment. However in the next few episodes titled Wish You Were Here, Stairway To Heaven, and What Difference A Day Makes; Izzie continues to hallucinate about Denny often asking him to leave.

Meanwhile, Izzie was also diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma that triggered her hallucinations.
