In Stranger Things Season 5, Nell Fisher has emerged as a key cast member, playing Holly Wheeler in the show. Holly Wheeler’s arc remained a central anchor in Season 5’s story and the fight against Vecna.

Nell Fisher portrays the role with sincerity, but the story behind her landing this key role is more fun and clever than you can imagine. The actress joined the show in its fifth and final season, but in Seasons 1 through 4 of Stranger Things, Anniston and Tinsley Price played the character.

Spoiler warning for Stranger Things Season 4 and 5

Here's how Nell Fisher landed her role in Stranger Things

When Nell Fisher auditioned for the character of Holly Wheeler, she was only 11 years old, but as per the requirements of the on-screen character, the actress had to be 10 years old. This is why Nell Fisher pulled off a move that instantly caught the Duffer Brothers’ positive nod to cast her.

Fisher adjusted her appearance while filming her audition clip. She braided her hair into two, which lent her a younger look, bringing her closer to Holly’s actual age on the script.

When the Duffer Brothers saw her audition clip, they were ready to make an exception for her casting. Apart from this strong match of appearance, her natural acting skills also added to the positive casting decision.

Holly Wheeler remained an anchoring force in Stranger Things Season 5. After the events of Season 4, Hawkins was already devastated and struggling. But Season 5 brought the threat straight inside the homes of Hawkins’ residents.

In the final season, almost all the key characters of the show feel the result of this. The Demogorgon starts attacking and abducting children, and this is when the Wheeler residence is also attacked.

Nancy Wheeler, Holly and Mike’s mother, tried her best to protect Holly, yet when the doorway to the Upside Down opened right in her room and the Demogorgon came in, Holly was eventually snatched.

Nancy was severely injured and later taken to the hospital. Holly’s father was also grievously injured. It is in such heightened and tense moments that Holly Wheeler’s character emerges as a narrative anchor.

Holly is trapped inside Vecna’s mindscape and eventually meets with Max, who was taken to Henry’s warped internal space in Season 4. They both strategize and seek pathways for return, but only Max can make it back.

She also leads the 11 abducted children during the final confrontations with authority and strength. Conversations between Holly and Max were a nostalgic and powerful moment for viewers who hoped deeply for them to get back in the real world.

Nell Fisher, in these crucial moments of Season 5, portrays Holly convincingly during these key scenes. There is a reason why her casting was greenlit by the Duffer Brothers.

Nell met the twin actresses who had previously played Holly from Seasons 1 to 4 to understand the nuances of her character. This preparation ensured her portrayal of Holly was consistent and believable.

The actress did her groundwork and got herself familiar with the requirements of her role. Holly’s arc was important for the decisive result of many lives. Her return ensured Nancy and the Party could stop searching for her and focus on defeating Vecna.

Apart from her role in Stranger Things, Nell has acted in Evil Dead Rise (2023) and a comedy film titled Bookword, which came out in 2024. She debuted in the acting world with a New Zealand film called Northspur.

Stranger Things Season 5 is streaming on Netflix.
